About this event
"These Visitors From The Future Just Made An Embarrassing Discovery.
Our past."
7th House is proud to present an ultra rare screening of the zany time travel-mixup comedy SPIRIT OF 76 (1990), with live commentary and a Q&A by stars Jeff and Steve McDonald of Redd Kross!
Arriving right on time at the turn of the decade, no other film better encapsulates the nostalgic 90s Gen X fascination/embarrassment with the 70s better than comedy royalty (and now acclaimed painter) Lucas Reiner's debut feature. Co-written by Roman Coppola, with costumes by Sofia Coppola, the gleefully goofy spoof stars a cast of 70s icons, led by David Cassidy and Leif Garrett, alongside Olivia D'Abo (The Wonder Years) and Moon Unit Zappa and cameos from the likes of Carl Reiner and Rob Reiner (Lucas's father and brother, respectively), Tommy Chong, Julie Brown, Don Novello (AKA Father Guido Sarducci), and DEVO (yes, DEVO). Even with this cavalcade of characters though, the film is just about stolen by brother duo Jeff McDonald and Steve McDonald of legendary LA punk/rock/power pop band Redd Kross, fresh off their 60s/70s inspired album Third Eye, who star as a pair of sweet and stoney teenage buddies. For this very special screening, Steve and Jeff will join us in person, mics in hand, for a live commentary of the film, followed by a Q&A looking back on the making of this endearing should-be-cult gem!
By the year 2176, a magnetic storm has degaussed all recorded history, causing such valuable documents as the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to be lost. Three time travelers, Adam-11 (David Cassidy), Chanel-6 (Olivia d'Abo), and Heinz-57 (Geoff Hoyle) are sent back to July 4, 1776, to retrieve America's heritage, but due to an unnoticed time machine malfunction, end up in 1976 instead, during the United States Bicentennial. While attempting to carry out their mission, the time travelers dress in period costume (e.g., tight bell bottom pants), attend an EST meeting, experience the Sexual Revolution, Pop Rocks, disco, long gas lines, the AMC Pacer, and head shops. They are pursued by Rodney Snodgrass (Liam O'Brien), a science whiz and UFO buff, who thinks they are aliens, and plans to use their UFO (actually, their time machine) to win the Bicentennial Science Fair prize at his high school. Meanwhile, his self-absorbed, disco-dancing brother, Eddie Trojan (Leif Garrett), pursues Chanel-6 , but both are foiled by two dimwitted but good-hearted teenage friends, Tommy Sears and Chris Johnson (Steve and Jeff McDonald of Redd Kross), who help the time travelers to complete their mission and return to the future.
Join us for this rare screening and blast from the past (both 90s and 70s!) with a sure-to-be-unforgettable evening that's been 35 years in the making!
