Spirals is a song recital that explores the transformation of grief and shame into self-empowerment through stages of personal healing. On Saturday, January 21st, at 7:00pm, Spirals will be held at the Church Street School for Music and Art in NYC, featuring soprano Abagael Cheng and pianist Zachary Saffa.
Through poetry and song, the performers will articulate and honor an experience of spiraling down a path of anxiety, shame, isolation, betrayal, and grief. In response to being faced with these challenging emotions, the performers demonstrate how slow, deep healing work helped them generate a new sense of self. By embracing their personal power, centering self-love, and welcoming constant transformation after a time of loss, they developed their own sense of closure and discovered a way forward. This program includes music by Lili Boulanger, Melissa Dunphy, Aaron Copland, and more. A unique highlight is Kari Watson’s work, Facing Shadows, for electronics and voice, which was commissioned for the original performance of this concert in the summer of 2021, with text written by Abagael’s aunt.
Founded in 1990, Church Street School for Music and Art is a nonprofit community school for the arts in lower Manhattan that specializes in facilitating the physical creative process, and strives to connect each student with their unique artistic voice. They believe in the transformative and therapeutic power of the arts and are dedicated to providing accessibility to the arts for all. Since taking violin lessons there in elementary school, Abagael has considered Church Street School to be a formative part of her musical education. She is excited to be sharing music once again in this impactful, local institution. Abagael and Zachary met in the NYC ultimate frisbee community and their shared dedication to sports, music, and community turned into a fruitful collaboration. They have been making music together since 2021.
Tickets are “Pay what you can” from $1-$30 and can be purchased online.
