Workshop OverviewAsk a speaker of English about spelling, and they will likely bemoan the &#x27;craziness&#x27; of a language that features &#x27;so many rules and so many exceptions&#x27;. Such characterizations of English are neither accurate nor helpful. We are better off recognizing that English orthography is complex (not crazy) and rich in spelling patterns (not rules) that are used in various ways (not exceptions) to convey the spoken word. The Color Vowel Approach supports a sound-based exploration of spelling patterns that will spark your learners&#x27; curiosity about words in their spoken vs. written forms.Workshop ObjectivesIn this 4-week online workshop, participants will:<ul><li>Build on their understanding of ‘the problem of English’ as it relates to teaching spelling in ESL/EFL contexts;</li><li>Gain a deeper understanding of the Color Vowel Organizer for the purpose of connecting the spoken and written word.</li><li>Learn how to lead learners in a sound-based &quot;spelling exploration&quot; through use of the Spelling Exploration Worksheet, a simple but powerful graphic organizer.</li><li>Conduct their own spelling explorations as a means of gaining practical insight into the way English works.</li></ul>Workshop ScheduleThis course meets on Tuesdays from 8-9:30 pm ET (New York time) online with the following weekly themes:<ul><li>February 8: Spelling Exploration set up and procedures</li><li>February 15: Making comparisons across Color Vowels</li><li>February 22: Tricky words, and what to do with them</li><li>March 1: Spelling Roundup</li></ul>All sessions occur online through Zoom, are recorded, and are posted in a private YouTube playlist for those who have to miss part or all of a session. This workshop is designed for live interaction but can be taken asynchronously with permission from Color Vowel. Participants should have access to a Color Vowel Chart poster and a set of Color Vowel Image Cards. The workshop and all tasks are managed through our course platform. CertificateUpon completion of this course, participants will receive a Level 2 Workshop Certificate reflecting 6 hours of instruction. This course fulfills one of multiple requirements of Level 2 certification.
