About this event

How fast can you collage? This informal add-and-pass workshop will expand your collage repertoire while challenging you to work quickly, and you’ll leave the experience with a collaborative artist book to keep.

Participants will sit around a table to allow for circular passing of work, and techniques for timed collage will be chosen at random using a Surrealist Salt Cellar, better known as a Fortune Teller or Cootie Catcher. Example techniques are: standing to let torn paper fall to the floor to create a composition à la Hans Arp; froissage, developed by Czech artist Ladislav Novák in which the contours of a crumpled piece of paper are used to create a drawing made (see also work by Jiří Kolář); frottage, developed by Max Ernst as pencil rubbings to reveal textures beneath a paper; rollage, rearranging strips of cut images (see Jiří Kolář and contemporary artist Kensuke Koike); cubomania, invented by Romanian surrealist Gherasim Luca, cutting an image into squares and reassembling at random.

Supplies are provided, however you are welcome to bring your favorite collage tools!
