Yap? Where’s that?
Speak! Language Center has announced the launch of a free monthly series, Tea + Travel, beginning Tuesday, May 21 at 4:00 – 5:00pm at Vault in Charlottesville.
In partnership with Vault, the language center’s new home in the historic Bradbury Building on the Downtown Mall, ESL teacher Joyce McClure will present an hour-long talk about the culture and people of Yap, the small, remote island in the North Pacific that is one of four island states of the Federated States of Micronesia.
McClure lived on Yap for five years beginning in 2016 when she joined the Peace Corps as a Response Volunteer to provide marketing services for the 2018 Micronesian Games quadrennial sports event.
An award-winning photographer and published writer, her presentation will include photos of this captivating island and its outer islands that few know about and even fewer have traveled to.
“When I told my friends where I was moving to, many responded, ‘Oh! Indonesia! How exciting!’” she says. “I had to explain that it was MICROnesia in the far western Pacific Ocean.”
Come learn where Yap is for yourself!
