About this event

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice you have chosen the side of the oppressor” – Desmond Tutu.

White privilege allows for many the ability to ignore the news, and to react solely in shock at the harsh realities of violence directed at racialized persons while continuing to deny ongoing systemic oppression and exclusion perpetuated by white people. White privilege allows silence to seem socially acceptable when racially based violence can no longer be ignored. It is not. White members of the Alberta Assembly of Social Workers have committed to relentlessly challenge all acts of racism. We invite you to join us with your own commitment to anti-racism and to come together in vigil this Monday in honour of the life of George Floyd and other members of the Black community who have been victimized by racist brutality.

Event Zoom Chat will be strictly monitored to ensure that all participants are acting in according to the anti-oppressive values upheld by the Alberta Assembly of Social Workers. Any comments deemed inappropriate by the moderator will lead to immediate removal from the event. This event is not a place to defend police actions or create space for narratives that take away from the realities of systemic and structural racism and anti-Black racism present in our society.

If you have a question or comment that you would like to share, please send it as a private message on zoom to the moderator. Please keep your microphone muted unless invited to do otherwise, particularly during the moment of silence. Thank you.
