Sparking Action! is a day of hands-on learning about the science of fire, wildfire preparedness, and community actions that make us more resilient to wildfire! This free, family-friendly event includes a variety of activity stations to explore concepts:

  • live fire demonstrations
  • evacuation planning
  • story time for kids
  • DIY low-cost air filter workshop from 1:30-2:30 (free, sign up required)
  • See the Patagonia movie Fire Lines starting at 2:30 in the ScienceWorks Auditorium!

ScienceWorks Hands-On MuseumStudent-led service projects will showcase the work of local high school students who are participating in FireBright, the locally-developed wildfire science curriculum that is now offered at several schools in Jackson and Josephine Counties.Sparking Action! is sponsored by ScienceWorks, Southern Oregon Forest Restoration Collaborative, Ashland Fire & Rescue, the City of Ashland and Lomakatsi Restoration Project. Is admission free to ScienceWorks for everyone attending?

Yes and we have free parking.

What ages should attend?

This learning event will have fun activities for adults and children and we encourage everyone to attend.

What kind of topics will be covered?

You can learn more about emergency preparedness and evacuation during a disaster including wildfire. We will have subject matter specialists there to share more about Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge, fire ecology, fire science and how animals, trees and plants are adapted to fire.

Will Smokey Bear be there this year?

Yes, he will be there to give high-fives and encourage you to be fire safe.

Will mom and caregivers have fun at this event?

Absolutely! Mom and caregivers are encouraged to come. We will have some fun activities so kids can make their loved one a gift.
