The Leeds Beckett University Music, Sound and Site research group invite you to Sounding Leeds: a one-day symposium exploring the past, present and future of sound, sound media and music in public art and social practice in Leeds. The symposium will commence with a review of Leeds-based sound art work presented by the makers and enablers of this work. Following this, the audience and speakers are invited to consider together the possibility of a unique culture of creative and experimental engagement with sound and music in Leeds: can we say such a culture already exists? Is there an appetite and the resources for developing such a culture? Such questions seem pertinent in a year in which Leeds seeks a new culture strategy in support a bid for European Capital of Culture 2023.
Speaking and presenting at the event are:
- Sue Ball of MAAP, a Leeds-based art organisation with a history of facilitating public and community sound art in Leeds.
- Contributors to the ‘Light’ Neville Street project, an interdisciplinary urban redevelopment project with a high regard for sound and acoustics that bore Hans Peter Kuhn’s ‘Sound and Light Transit’ installation (2009), one of only a handful of permanent sculptural works in the world that comprise sound and one of even fewer that engage computing technologies. Joining Sue Ball in reviewing this project will be representatives of Bauman Lyons Architects and Arup Acoustics, and a new interview with Hans Peter Kuhn will be presented.
- Andy Abbott; an artist, musician and writer. Through his role as ‘Producer Music and Visual Arts’ at University of Bradford, Andy has developed the leftfield music and arts festivals Bradford Threadfest and Recon, and is presently developing a centre for socially applied arts.
- Alan Dunn; a lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Beckett. Through this role, Alan has supported a great deal of student sound art work in the city. Alan is also a highly regarded sound art practitioner himself.
- Ed Waring of Hope and Social, a band whose practice includes community engagement. Ed is also a regular collaborator with Invisible Flock, an interactive arts organisation based in Leeds whose work such as the recent ‘105db’ (2016) often comprise highly innovative and compelling uses of sound.
- Marion Harrison; an artist, curator and lecturer based in Leeds. In 2015, Marion created Project Radio with artist Sophie Mallett. Project Radio was an exhibition space and online radio broadcast which emphasised the collaborative potential of sound art and radio within the gallery space.
- James Mabbett; an Artist, Musician and Composer. James produces sound art as Napoleon IVth and releases music and tours as Napoleon IIIrd. Over the past couple of years James has produced site-specific installations for venues both in Leeds and further afield.
Also presenting and providing an informed outside perspective will be David Prior, a lecturer at Falmouth University and one half of the artist group Liminal, winners of the 2010 PRS for Music Foundation's New Music award for the public artwork ‘Organ of Corti’ (2010).
The symposium will comprise two sessions: The morning session is to be dedicated to the ‘Light’ Neville Street project, Hans Peter Kuhn’s installation and MAAP’s wider portfolio of sound artwork in Leeds. The afternoon session is to commence with short presentations from each of the invited speakers then a plenary, a discussion between all attendants, upon the subject of the day: public sound art and social practice in Leeds.
The symposium is free and all are welcome: those with an interest and investment in art and culture in Leeds as well as local and national art enthusiasts, practitioners and academics. Morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided. Lunch will not be provided but can be purchased from the Tetley Bar. Numbers are limited so please book your place in good time via Eventbrite.
