Nature photography is not the serene, life-prolonging experience most magazine articles say it is. In fact, it’s anything but the “Zen” experience they espouse. Come listen to Dean Newman, a nature photographer from our area, tell the “behind-the-scenes” stories of the images you see in publications. Dean has been bitten, scratched, kicked, spat on and along with any other ways birds, animals and reptiles can injure you, all in the name of “getting the shot”. You’ll never look at another magazine photograph the same.

Dean Newman also serves as one of the Chapter Directors for the Southern Maryland Audubon Society. Dean and his wife, Sandy, have lived in St. Mary’s County since March of 2001. He is fully retired and spends most of his time traveling and photographing birds all over the Western Hemisphere. Originally from North Florida, he spent 29 years in the Navy and taught graduate courses for the government for 15 years afterwards in government acquisition. Dean’s passion is conservation of wild habitat, and he works with and donates to many conservation organizations.
