Save the Date - Sony Hackathon, Friday 9th June 2023, Engineering Building A, University of Manchester: Limited places so register earlyThe event should be a fun end to the exam period with judges being drawn from across the Faculty as well as flying in from Sony Japan &amp; Europe. A range of prizes will be offered across three categories. The challenge will be shared at the start of what will be an entertaining and intense few hours where you can equally well show your flair for<ul><li>Creativity &amp; Vision</li><li>Innovation</li><li>Delivering Practical Solutions</li></ul>With prizes offered by Sony Semiconductors across all categories as well as an overall winning team.<ul><li>Whether you are interested in a fun day, prizes, free food or a career opportunity the event should be a memorable one to end the year</li></ul>The event is open to students from any discipline across the Faculty of Science and Engineering and beyond. Coding skills are not essential as winners will equally well include those with the brightest ideas and visionary pitches as much as for those who can excel in delivering pragmatic technical solutions to a tight deadline, no matter how rough. The event will be based on team working within groups of four students. You may register as a self-selected team of four, individually or in smaller groups. Do not worry if you have less than four people as any missing numbers will be made up once registration closes.As is the nature of such events the specific challenge will be a mystery before the day and will be broad enough to be inclusive and challenging no matter what your chosen undergraduate course may be. To get a head start it is suggested that you get familiar with the concept of Edge Computing and visit the following forum, enough said:<ul><li><a href="https://developer.sony.com/develop/spresense/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://developer.sony.com/develop/spresense/</a></li></ul>Description: The hackathon is an activity organized in collaboration by Sony and The University of Manchester. The University of Manchester is part of the Sensing Solution University collaboration Program, and this is an additional activity next to their main research project. The aim of this activity is for the students to come up with qualitative and innovative use cases for the Spresense microcontroller board. The hackathon will include 3 categories: 1) Creativity &amp; Vision, 2) Innovation, 3) Delivering Practical Solutions. The event is open to students from any discipline across the Faculty of Science and Engineering of The University of Manchester. Coding skills are not essential as winners will equally well include those with the brightest ideas and visionary pitches as much as for those who can excel in delivering pragmatic technical solutions to a tight deadline, no matter how rough. The event will be based on team working within groups of four students. Judging:The judge of the competition will be different for the 3 categories and each will include one member of the academic staff working at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of The University of Manchester and one Sony engineer working with Spresense. The criteria for judging will include: <ul><li>Originality of idea</li><li>The delivery of a pragmatic technical solution within a tight deadline</li><li>Creation and delivery of a 3 minute pitch</li></ul>Prizes: A range of prizes will be offered by Sony (prizes for 3 winner teams, a total of 12 students) and the Electrical &amp; Electronic Engineering Department. These will include M5 headphone sets to each of the winning team members in each category as well as an overall prize to be announced on the day. The Sony prizes will come from the Organiser: Technology Promotion Department, SEU, Sony Europe B.V. , Mobilvägen Nya Vattentornet, 221 88 Lund, Sweden. Equipment supplied on the Day: Each team will have access to an <a href="https://mou.sr/44zaOdS" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Spresense module</a> and <a href="https://mou.sr/3VxptSX" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Extension board </a>on the day. These will be for sole use of the team and they are free for the team to take away at the end of the day alongside <a href="https://uk.farnell.com/sandisk/sdsdqm-032g-b35/memory-cards-microsdhc-card-32gb/dp/3777611" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SD cards</a> and <a href="https://uk.farnell.com/element14/glj-c4-1506/usb-cable-micro-bit-kit/dp/2845435" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">USB cables</a>. Additionally a limited number of <a href="https://mou.sr/44ubQrF" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sony camera modules</a> as well as <a href="https://uk.farnell.com/seeed-studio/83-16992/esp8266-wifi-module-breakout-board/dp/2801859" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Wi-Fi interface modules </a>will be available for teams that may want to use them.Equipment to bring on the Day:A﻿ laptop to communicate with the systems, if appropriate, and definitely to develop your final Hackathon pitch upon. Any components that you think might be useful to use with the systems to help you meet the challenge that is given at the start of the day.NOTE:Applicants must register using a valid University of Manchester email address. Any applications from non-university addresses will be rejected.TEAM APPLICATIONS:If you are registering as a member of a team of up to 4 people, then your team must send a single email with the title &#x27;Sony 2023 Hackathon Team&#x27; to EEEOps@manchester.ac.uk.
