Songwriters in the Round: Anne Heaton, Carmen Nickerson, and Katie Dahl

Anne Heaton and Carmen Nickerson (both from Milwaukee) and Katie Dahl (from Door County) are all smart, honest songwriters with a knack for lyric and melody. Musically, they are diverse, roaming to explore blues, folk, and pop influences. At Anodyne, they’ll swap songs in an intimate “in the round” format, adding comment and texture to each other’s work. This will be an evening of connection and joy. Come join these singer-songwriters as they share stories, songs, and likely some laughs as well.

Anne Heaton

Anne Heaton is a singer-songwriter and teaching artist who has captured audience imaginations with her songs that are, by turns, “tender, barbed and spiritual” (Washington Post). She’s been featured by the New York Times Music Podcast, NPR, the Sundance Film Festival and Lilith Fair (2010). Anne has headlined over 1,000 shows in North America and shared the stage with artists such as Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, and jazz drummer Max Roach. Anne has taught songwriting at Berklee College of Music, Interlochen, and GRAMMY Camp. She recently researched the SEL outcomes of songwriting with teenagers for her master’s thesis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Anne lives in Milwaukee, loves coffee, Lake Michigan and being a mom to two freethinking daughters.

Carmen Nickerson

Carmen Nickerson, a singer-songwriter rooted in heartland values, weaves profound truths and empowering messages into her music. Collaborating with renowned artists Willy Porter, Kostia Efimov, John Calarco, Dave Adler, Mai Bloomfield and Stas Venglevski, her work transcends boundaries. Her debut solo album, Room To Grow, was in the top 15 albums of 2023 the by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Piet Levy wrote: "Contrary to the implied humility in the title, “Room to Grow” sounds like an album that took a lifetime to create, the way Nickerson, through music and lyrics, sweetly honors the many inspirations of her life, from a spirited late friend on the blooming “Emily” to her childhood farm in Iowa on the swinging, beaming title track."

Katie Dahl

Katie Dahl is a songwriter and playwright known for her whip-smart lyrics, rich alto, mischievous onstage wit, and unflinching honesty. A small-town celebrity in Door County, the small Wisconsin peninsula where her family has lived for 175 years, Katie is also an internationally touring, radio-charting artist who “delivers razor-sharp lyrics with a hearty, soulful voice” (American Songwriter). “In unsettled times,” says Peter Mulvey, “Katie Dahl brings us a grounded spirit.”
