Overview

This event is an example-driven four-day workshop on basic computing skills. Short tutorials alternate with hands-on practical exercises.

Join us for a four-day Software Carpentry workshop, taking place 18-21 May from 10 am - 2 pm pm Eastern Time (UTC -4). Designed to be interactive rather than lecture-based, Carpentries workshops emphasize active participation, with lessons that build progressively. Please note that the workshop will not be recorded, and we strongly recommend attending in real time.

This beginner-friendly Software Carpentry workshop covers Shell, Git, and Python and provides a solid foundation for further self-directed learning. You will leave the workshop feeling prepared to:

  • use the command-line to navigate file structures and work with files
  • write custom Bash scripts to automate repetitive analyses
  • implement simple Git workflows for tracking work
  • Use conditionals and loops, write functions, and run programs from the command line using Python

Each session combines short tutorials with hands-on exercises, encouraging collaboration and real-world application of skills to your own work.

Participants must use a laptop or desktop (not a tablet) with administrative privileges to fully engage in the workshop activities.
