Utah Igniteis a partnership between the Chambers of Commerce (Point of the Mountain, American Fork, and South Valley) andUS Ignite, a program under the National Science Foundation. Utah Ignite is one of 25 Smart Gigabit Communities (SGC) throughout the United States.“US Ignite spurs the creation of next-generation applications and services that leverage advanced networking technologies to build the foundation for smart communities, including cities, rural areas, regions, and states. The nonprofit organization helps to accelerate new wired and wireless networking advances from research to prototype to full-scale smart community and interconnected national deployments.” (See US-Ignite.com).Utah Ignite is also an important part of the Utah Smart City Eco-System. As a Gigabit Community, Utah Ignite Exists to Find the New Light Bulbs for the Internet Age. “Electricity is history. Today we face the next-generation infrastructure: gigabit networks. Buffmire is currently a Research Corporate Ambassador working with advanced technologies at the University of Utah (UofU). In this role he works with university researchers across multiple disciplines and various state agencies and private industry to provide a strategic interface between commercial enterprise and technology research at the university. While trained as an attorney Mr. Buffmire has been in business development and strategy roles in the telecommunications industry for over 20 years. He was on the launch team and business development director for Sprint PCS, a Vice President of Business Development for a publicly traded Sprint Affiliate and a Director of Strategy and Business Development in the Unified Communications Group at Microsoft. He was also the founder and CEO of two telecommunication technology companies backed by Silicon Valley Venture Capital firms. He has a long history in the development of collaborative business, industry and joint development projects and relationships in wireless and digital communication technologies and systems.
Of particular interest to the Utah Ignite Smart Cities community, Mr. Buffmire was a key participant in the development of industry support for the UofU’s $25m grant awarded by the National Science Foundation to build a Platform for Advanced Wireless Research covering the UofU, residential areas of Salt Lake City and the downtown business district. This project, which the UofU has named POWDER (Platform for Open Wireless Data-driven Experimental Research), establishes Utah’s leadership in advanced wireless research as it would apply to Smart City initiatives locally, nationally and globally.
