Small Great Conversations are virtual gatherings for a dialogue about the realities of racial injustice and what we can do to about them.

Small Great Conversations on Racism Every January, the TEDxJacksonville team gathers for our annual retreat where we debate and choose the theme for that year’s conference. This year, inspired by the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we selected Small Great Things as our 2020 theme. (King wrote, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”)Now, six months later, the theme feels uncomfortably, perversely prescient. The year has been hijacked by a small thing (measured in nanometers) of such great and terrifying power that it has altered our lives and our planet. The coronavirus pandemic also has laid bare some hard truths: Although we’re all weathering the same storm, we’re not all in the same boat. It’s vital that we acknowledge the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color, and also that we recognize how systemic inequality and racial injustice have permeated the American experience.To that end, TEDxJacksonville is introducing Small Great Conversations, a program of virtual gatherings built around honest dialogue about the realities of racial injustice and what each of us can do to stop perpetuating it. This series will feature in-depth conversations with past TEDxJacksonville speakers whose talks have renewed resonance in this year of profound change and heightened clarity. The free program will begin in August.We are living through uncharted times. There is little precedent for how to navigate them. But we can still do small things in a great way. We can activate empathy and bring visibility to injustice. We can choose every day to think, act, and advocate for equality. And we can each of us commit to ensuring we don’t pass through this period unchanged. This conversation is with TEDxJacksonville speaker Phillip Singleton, who delivered the TEDx talk &quot;Real Change Comes Through Policy, Not Protest.&quot;Phillip is a best-selling author, political strategist, and influencer known as the Hip Hop Lobbyist. In 2014, he founded the full-service governmental affairs and multicultural outreach firm Singleton Consulting. Phillip previously served as Legislative Director for a law firm, providing clients with legislative guidance, culturally targeted messaging and strategic campaign outreach.In 2010, at the age of 24, he became the youngest African-American lobbyist in Florida’s history.During his time working in Florida’s political process, Phillip has played an instrumental role in passing legislation regarding the expansion of Major League Soccer in Florida; securing resources for top 50 and historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs); campaign and election reform; along with securing millions in state resources for various local government and economic development projects.Since opening his firm in 2014, Phillip Singleton has given underserved communities, nonprofits, and institutions of higher education a seat at the political table. He has secured millions in resources for at-risk youth programs and economic development initiatives in urban communities throughout Florida. He has been recognized by many governmental and media entities for his work with millennials and in bridging the gap between politics and urban culture. He was proud in 2018 to serve U.S. Congressman Al Lawson (FL) as his Senior Advisor in his successful reelection campaign. He is married to Jalencia A. Singleton of Delray Beach, Florida.TEDxJacksonville organizers intend to use Facebook Live to share the event to a larger audience. All attendees via Zoom and Facebook may submit their questions via Q&amp;A in Zoom or via a comment on the Facebook Live thread.The conversation will be moderated by TEDxJacksonville Director of Communications David Johnson. TEDxJacksonville Licensee and Executive Producer Sabeen Producer will open the event with Phillip&#x27;s talk.
