The AUDELCO and Obie Award-winning Billie Holiday Theatre is artistic anchor to the largest African American community in the nation: Central Brooklyn and one of the last remaining theaters forged in the aesthetic and sociocultural kiln of America’s Civil Rights/Black Arts Movements. Founded in May 1972, The Billie Holiday Theatre is a beacon for world class art rooted in racial justice in the heart of Bed-Stuy: producing, presenting, and commissioning new and classic works and festivals in theater, dance, music, visual arts, and film; providing artistic and institutional residencies; and serving ages 3 to 103 with educational programming. For bold and daring artists and audiences from around the corner and around the world who look to The Billie as a rigorous artistic space that tackles racial injustices, presents new and unapologetic voices, and imagines a world where all people can flourish...welcome home.

Free live music and spoken word to kick off Summer Fest 2021!

An electric blend of adventurous spoken word, musical and movement based artists. We will kick off the series next Friday with our host Clyla Destiny and bring various artist to the stage including Dagi-Ann, Mekhiel from Rapha center and renowned tap dancer Adante Power.ABOUTLaunched in 2018, Skylight Open’s is The Billie’s monthly music and spoken word series featuring cutting edge Brooklyn-based talent. Some 6 musicians and spoken word artists are presented each month with past artists including Alia Pierre, Inaya Day, Tai Allen Phoenix, and Keisha Gaye Anderson.Support for the 2021-2022 season has been generously provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Altman Foundation, Con Edison, The Jordan Brand, Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, the Ford Foundation, The Fund for the City of New York, Howard Gilman Foundation, Kresge Foundation, The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, Lily Auchincloss Foundation, Lucille Lortel Foundation, The Maurice Sendak Foundation, Mertz Gilmore Foundation, The New York Community Trust, and The Shubert Foundation, Srinija Srinivasan Fund of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and Universal Music Group's Task Force for Meaningful Change. The J. L. Greene Art Access Fund in The New York Community Trust has also partnered with The Billie Holiday Theatre to bring the performing arts to underrepresented audiences throughout New York.
