Short Films, Big City

When thinking about the city we most times love, some times hate, everyone has a different story to tell. Come for films that find our communities in unexpected moments—whether it's through pick-pocketing locals, a textual bond between neighbors, or a candy-colored haven for artists. Fact or fiction, these films brilliantly capture the ever-evolving ecosystem that is New York.

THE FILMS

The Candy Factory

Cory Jacobs & Jason Schmidt | US| 20 mins

A turn-of-the-century former candy factory in Brooklyn is more than just a space for artists to create—it's an ecosystem held together by the particular, magnetic force of the building's owner.

Drago

A young boy's dream of becoming a doctor is challenged when war forces his family to flee their village and move to New York City.

It's Not About The Hat

Navigating the ruins of a breakup, Cleo attempts to get her hat back from her ex.

Rumpelstiltskin

74 Messages Sent & Received

Danya Abt | US | 11 mins

Organized by

At Rooftop Films we believe film can be so much more than just watching a movie, so we curate unique events that combine great music, quality film, and some of the most beautiful locations that New York has to offer. By thinking beyond the screen, we help to bring communities together and change the way that film, music, art, and ideas interact with the city around us.

Rooftop Films’ mission is to engage and inspire diverse communities by showing movies in outdoor locations, supporting the production of new independent films, helping local organizations to produce screenings and events, and renting equipment at low-cost to artists and nonprofits. Rooftop Films is more than a film festival. We are a community. We are a collective collaboration between filmmakers and festivals; between audience members and artists; between venues and neighborhoods. Our goal is to nurture a vibrant independent filmmaking and film-going community not only by exhibiting the work of emerging filmmakers, but also by providing essential support systems for those who otherwise have none.
