About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Welcome to the Sugar Hill New Mom's Group! This group was organized to help new moms create an ecosystem of friendship and support during one of the most vulnerable (and scary) moments in a person's life. Over 100 mothers in Harlem and beyond have been served by this group since it began in 2018.

If there is anything we know well, it's the power of community and the need for community when you become a mother. With all the questions and anxieties that come with one of the happiest moments of a person's life, having a community of other mothers experiencing the same moment in life is invaluable.

Between the long-term bonds you will form and the built-in exchange network of baby clothes, diapers, toys, and other baby supplies babies amass in their first few years of life, the investment in groups like these pay dividends in both your social-emotional well-being as well as your wallet.

SHMOMS runs for six weeks and a new group begins every other month. This group particularly welcomes moms with babies born March, April, and May 2024 but can accept slightly older babies. Please reach out if you have any questions!

Frequently asked questions

Where do we meet?

There are six sessions total. The first five are held on zoom. Our final session is in person at the Sugar Hill Creamery store on Lenox Ave and 119th street in Harlem, NY.

How did this group come to be?

This group was founded by Sugar Hill Creamery Co-Founder Petrushka Bazin Larsen in March 2018 a few weeks after the birth of her third child and six months after opening with her husband Sugar Hill Creamery, Harlem's first small-batch ice cream shop in 30+ years.

Who is ideal for this group?

The group is ideal for Moms with babies ages 0-3 months. We welcome moms with babies who are slightly older as well. Mother's joining are looking for opportunities to build connections with other mothers in the neighborhood through thoughtful reflection about this season of life.

What can I expect?

A a safe and inclusive environment where each week the group engages in a theme-based conversation focused on the many aspects of becoming a mother -- navigating your new identity, childcare, self care, building community, and establishing work/life balance.

Who leads the group?

Leading this particular group is Kathleen Coy, Harlem based mom chef entrepreneur. A 2021 alum of SHMOMS Kathleen has been trained by Petrushka in the very specific modalities and is currently working on becoming a Postpartum Doula.

What am I paying for?

You are paying for a very well oiled facilitation model that allows you to be vulnerable while intentionally and genuinely connecting with the other participants in your group. The result is often a very long lasting connection with people experiencing life at the same moment as you.

My baby is not here yet, may I join?

This group is specifically for mothers with children 0-3 months born Mar-May. Below you can find dates for upcoming sessions!

Do I have to go to all the sessions?

The series is designed intentionally for six sessions. We truly encourage you to schedule around in order to get the full benefits. We understand that as new moms life happens but if you must miss a session unfortunately there is no refund or prorated amount.

Does my baby need to attend?

No, your baby does not need to attend. Babies are most welcome but some moms prefer to leave the child in the care of another to have some me time. The time is truly for you! Do whatever works for you.
