About this event

  • 13 hours 30 minutes

The Security Studies Program is excited to offer a day trip to the Norfolk Naval Base this summer. Adjunct Professor John Gordon will lead the trip. Students depart from Georgetown Main Campus at 8:00 am and are expected to be back by 9:30 pm. More information on the trip logistics can be found below.

This trip is open to current SSP students and SSP students graduating in May and August 2024. Please note that this trip is open to U.S. citizens only.

Please read all of the information below before registering.

Norfolk is the headquarters and home port of the Navy's Fleet Forces Command and is the largest naval station in the world. The trip will include a tour of an aircraft carrier and either a cruiser or destroyer (subject to approval). We will find out a few days prior to the trip which ships we will visit

Trip Logistics

  • Transportation

SSP will provide transportation to and from the naval station. You must ride in the bus with SSP if you are attending the trip (you cannot meet the bus at the location).

The bus will depart from Georgetown promptly at 8:00 am. The bus will return to Georgetown by 9:30 pm (traffic depending).

  • Suggested attire

Wear comfortable, casual, clothing, long pants preferred, and deck or tennis-type shoes.

  • Food

Snacks and water will be provided by SSP but not full meals. Bring about enough money for lunch and possibly dinner --- no more than $50 should be needed. Lunch can be purchased at the food court of the Navy Exchange before attendees board the bus again and head to the first ship or aircraft carrier. The bus may or not may not stop for dinner depending on timing in the evening.

Bring photo ID

There will be some places on the base where photos will be permitted, but the Navy will restrict taking pictures at various locations.

Cancellation Policy

Because of the base's security requirements, it is hard for SSP to make late changes to the attendee list. If you need to cancel, you must do so by June 5, 2024 at 11:59 pm. Contact jd2130@georgetown.edu if you want to cancel your registration.

Tickets are non-transferable. Cancelling after June 5 means that you take a spot away from a classmate who could have attended.
