We need help bagging oyster shells that can be used for restoration efforts!

🦪 Join Us for a Shell Bagging Day!We’ll be moving and bagging oyster shells into biodegradable bags that will later be used to restore vital marine habitats.We’ll be working at our shell drop site at the REAP Climate Center, where all of our East Bay restaurant shells are dropped off. The shells come from our “chicken lounge,” where they’re picked clean by our hardworking chickens before being bagged up for restoration projects. We will be bagging about 150, 15lb bags of shell at REAP Climate Center and then moving these bags over to the California Historical Radio Society (2152 Central Ave, Alameda, CA 94501) for longer-term storage. We welcome you to join us at both locations! We will be starting on REAP.These shells will play a key role in rebuilding oyster reefs and supporting a healthy Bay ecosystem!✅ What to bring:<ul><li>Closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting messy</li><li>Water bottle and sun protection</li></ul>Register today and help us give these shells a second life in our Bay waters Shell Bagging Day Schedule:10-10:30am (@ REAP): People arrive at REAP and sign waivers. You can park to the right of the North Entrance of REAP and then walk to our shipping container/picnic tables down the long dirt road.10:30-11am: Talk about our work &amp; the 3 activities for the day – empty chicken lounge, bag 50 bags of shell (demonstrate) &amp; load loose shell into truck. We're transferring shell to the Radio Society, 2 mi away for whoever wants to join that group. Our lead volunteer, Luke will be in charge of managing the volunteers at REAP and Giulio, our Acting Director will be in charge of managing volunteers at the Radio Society.11am: Divide into 3 groups of 10-15 people with flexibility to help where needed. Have 2 people stationed at the truck to count the shell as people put shell in (3,000lbs max).<ol><li>Group 1 – Shoveling shell into wheelbarrows at the chicken lounge and dropping them off in the truck (once the chicken lounge is done, volunteers shift to help us with the shell on the roof or elsewhere)</li><li>Group 2 – Cutting and tying 50 bags (cut 12” length bag and double knot on one side). Then flip the buckets that are dropped off and fill a bag and double-knot the other side. 2 knots total per bag.</li><li>Group 3 – Moving the loose shell on the container roof into the truck. 3 people will be shoveling the shell on the roof and passing buckets down to other volunteers to go into the truck.</li></ol>11:30am: Rod + Giulio will drive first load to Radio Society (+ ladder, 5 buckets, 5 shovels, one wheelbarrow). At this time, we need about 10 volunteers to transfer to the Radio Society (just a 5-minute drive) to help us there for the rest of the event.11:40am-12:00pm (@ Radio Society): Unload loose shell and bags to the designated area @ radio society. Then to the container roof. We will be using the furthest container in the back next to the gate. We can store the shell on both sides of the smaller ends of the container. Supplies: 5 ladders, 5 shovels, 5 buckets, one wheelbarrow.<ul><li>Step 1: Move shell to the designated area first before the roof</li><li>Step 2: Lay down tarp on the container roof and use 2 zip ties per corner (8 total)</li><li>Step 3: Move the bagged and loose shell to the top of the shipping container. Able to use the Carabiner method to lift buckets of loose shell onto the roof.</li></ul>12:00pm: Volunteer (Rod) drives empty U-Haul back to REAP. Giulio and 10 volunteers stay to move the shell.12:10-12:50pm (@ REAP): Truck arrives. Load for the second time.1pm: Volunteer (Rod) drives to Radio Society with the second/last shell load1:10pm-1:30pm (@ REAP): Wrap up at REAP (clean up, gather equipment)1-1:30pm (@ Radio Society): Unload last shell haul at Radio Society and wrap up. Clean up, gather equipment
