About this event

HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU.

Consider the peril a female--teenager, adult, or even child--who lives in one of the almost two dozen states in America that has outlawed abortion might face. In the urgently important investigation of this crisis, health reporter Shefali Luthra, author of UNDUE BURDEN: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America, recounts story after story of the overwhelming effort people seeking abortions face.

Told from the perspective of the patients themselves, abortion providers, legal activists, and lawmakers, Luthra reveals the sometimes impossible odds that these patients face to terminate their pregnancies. Fetal and maternal abnormalities might be the reason. Age might be another. Family and personal situations might be other factors. The obstacles are profound: finding a clinic in another state, finding transportation to get there, finding the money to access that transportation, to name only a few. This book is a call to action for reproductive freedom in the United States.

Melanie Mason knows how to steer a tough conversation. You might remember her from the first Senate candidate debate, where she patiently demanded that candidates answer the question that was asked. Melanie is a senior political reporter with Politico, covering California politics. Prior to Politico, she covered state and national politics for 12 years at the LA Times, won awards for her coverage of sexual harassment in California politics, and was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that covered the leaked audio tapes that still roil City Hall.
