Sheep Herding Demonstration

The Trust for Governors Island is the nonprofit corporation created by the City of New York that is responsible for the redevelopment and operation of 150 acres of Governors Island. The Trust’s mission is to realize the full potential of Governors Island for the inspiration and enjoyment of all New Yorkers, demonstrating a bold vision for public space.

Join Friends of Tivoli Lake Preserve and Farm and the Trust for Governors Island for a sheep herding demonstration on Governors Island. Head to Hammock Grove to watch their shepherd, along with Kirk–their intrepid herding dog–in action and learn about all that it takes to manage a flock of sheep and control invasive plant species through regenerative land principles in the heart of New York City. You&#x27;ll also have the opportunity to buy wool fresh from the farm (donation-based).<ul><li>Demonstrations will take place in Hammock Grove on Governors Island</li><li>Look but don’t touch! Spectators will be asked to maintain a safe distance from the animals to maintain sheep safety and comfort.</li></ul>Hammock Grove is approximately a 10 minute walk and 5 minute bike ride from Soissons Landing. The Island also has wheelchair-accessible tram service that leaves from Soissons Landing every 30-45 minutes, with stops at Liggett Terrace.



The demonstration will start promptly at 4pm, and will be held entirely outdoors on Governors Island. Please dress with the weather in mind and bring plenty of water. Water bottle refill stations are available throughout the Island. For the third straight year the Trust for Gov­er­nors Island is proud to wel­come a fam­i­ly of five sheep for their sum­mer land­scap­ing jobs. Hail­ing from Friends of Tivoli Lake Pre­serve and Farm in Albany these sheep spend the summer munch­ing away on mug­wort, phrag­mites and oth­er inva­sive species, free­ing up the Island’s hor­ti­cul­ture team to do more impor­tant work and helping our incredibly biodiverse ecosystem thrive. Meet Evening, Chad, Philip Aries, Bowie, and Jupiter at an upcoming herding demonstration! Sheep herding demonstrations are free and open to all, and are held entirely outdoors on Governors Island.
