What is the Sunday Morning Workshop?

This year, we have the opportunity to provide all registrants with an upgraded format that includes a Sunday Morning Workshop: all participants will split up into small groups and train a new behavior to one of our Demo Horses, with real-time feedback and critique from Shawna Karrasch.

Will there be riding?

YES! All skill levels are welcome, you’ll see participants of ALL levels, from beginning target training with positive reinforcement to improving their horse’s bascule over fences using the clicker.

Is stabling available?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Please contact the host for stabling: Samantha Rubio 619.947.1559 or samjrubio@gmail.com. You’ll need to fill out a couple of forms and provide appropriate vaccination records by March 31st.

Question 4

Where do I check in?

Signs will point you to the Check-In Table, at 8:30am on Saturday and Sunday morning, where you’ll sign or submit any remaining forms, and collect your nametag (which will hold your group assignment) and goodie bag.

Should I bring my own lunch?

You can bring your own lunch. Additionally, lunch orders are available (with payment and RSVP!). Sandwich or salad.

Can my horse get turnout if we stay at the venue over the weekend?

Yes, limited availability for turnout in individual paddock is available. Please indicate  your request for turnout on the day stall contract, and contact the host to arrange turnout for your horse (Samantha samjrubio@gmail.com or 6199471559).

Where do I park my trailer?

We have availability for trailer parking on-site. Please indicate the trailer accommodation you need in your day stall contract, and contact Samantha to arrange parking (samjrubio@gmail.com or 6199471559).

Do you have a warmup ring?

Accepted Answer

No. We only have one arena on the property. You are welcome to warm up your horse in hand or ridden (no lunging) in the courtyard loop, along the pathways between paddocks, or on our warmup trail through the woods. You can ask a boarder or the host for directions (:

Should I bring water?

Yes! We will have water bottles available in a cooler, but they go quick. Please bring your own water bottle.

Should I bring a chair?

Question 11

What kind of equipment should I expect to bring?

Accepted Answer

You should bring your treat pouch, targets, mats, cones, tack if you plan to ride, and whatever other props you normally use in your training. Here at Misty Step we have a reverse roundpen, plenty of extra targets and cones, and a full set of jumps.

Should I bring treats?

If you are bringing a horse, YES, please bring the food you normally use in training for the weekend. We will have available: Hay pellets, low NSC treats, high value packaged treats, and Senior Feed. Low and high value mixes will be stored and available in the ring.

Should I plan to be there the whole weekend, or just for my session?

DEFINITELY plan to be there all day, both days. Saturday morning starts with an introductory lecture on the science of equine behavior and its application in all aspects of care and training, followed by a Q&A with Shawna. Sunday morning starts with an all-participant, customized training workshop.

Where should I park my car?

Follow the signs to clinic registrant parking, right in front of the barn!

Is the driveway hard to find?

Accepted Answer

Most people’s GPS leads them to the church parking lot next door. We are the next driveway down the hill, where you’ll see a row of mailboxes and a demarcating set of balloons. Take the gravel driveway through the woods all thew way to the barn.

Will breakfast be provided?

Yes! We will have donuts and/or bagels + cream cheese and coffee available from Dunkin Donuts.

Question 17

I am bringing my horse. Can I volunteer him as a Demo Horse in the Sunday Workshop?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We are looking for demo horses to use in our Sunday Morning Workshop. Demo Horses need to have some basic experience with positive reinforcement training, shaping through successive approximations, and be friendly with people and able to switch between human handlers.
