Shaper Origin 101

Shaper Origin 101

Overview

Shaper Origin 101

This class introduces the Shaper Origin, a handheld CNC router that combines digital precision with hands-on control. Students will begin with a tool overview, learning the core components, safety considerations, and basic operation of the Shaper Origin.

Participants will then explore how to place and scale designs directly on the tool, including importing files and aligning them accurately to real-world workpieces. A Shaper Trace overview will cover how to create and use scanned workspaces for precise layout and repeatable results.

The class also includes an introduction to the Shaper Workstation, focusing on fixturing, workholding, and strategies for vertical and small-part machining. Practical cutting techniques will be demonstrated through common applications such as cutting inlays (including bowties) and accurately routing mortises for SOSS hinges.

By the end of the class, students will have a foundational understanding of Shaper Origin workflows and the confidence to apply the tool to furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodworking projects.
