<P><STRONG>INTRODUCTION</STRONG></P>

<DIV>The “Shape Changing Materials” workshop brings together smart materials with computational design and digital fabrication in context to garments or wearables.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>This 3-day workshop explores the possibilities of interactive wearable projects and finding alternative ways to use smart materials. The participants will experiment with responsive shape-shifting materials (shape memory wire) with 3D modeling and computation-based approaches using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Along with hands-on prototyping, codes will be provided for participants and workshop guests to generate digitally simulated materials. The final outcome will be prototypes of shape changing materials to discover garment behavior. Participants will use user-centered methods to contextualize the use cases of an interactive garment solution.</DIV>

<LI><STRONG>Day 1:</STRONG> Introduction to smart materials and applications. Experimentation with shape memory wire (SMA), texitles, and concept development of the adjustable garment.</LI>
<LI><STRONG>Day 2: </STRONG>Introduction to Rhino and Grasshopper. Prototype and create digital visualizations on Rhino of the SMA &amp; fabric. Participants will pair into group teams to make simulation of fabrics integrated with SMA.</LI>
<LI><STRONG>Day 3:</STRONG> Finalization of the design exploration and fabrication onto small textile swatches in groups. Documentation of process, material behavior, and wearable application.</LI>

<DIV><STRONG>REQUIREMENTS</STRONG></DIV>

<LI>The workshop is open to all participants.</LI>
<LI>No previous experience with Rhinoceros &amp; Grasshopper software is required (but useful to have basic knowledge).</LI>
<LI>Participants must bring their own laptop with a pre-installed Rhino (No additional cost for the participant &amp;  can be downloaded as evaluation version, with Grasshopper plugins. Knowledge or skills in garment fabrication are not required but welcome.</LI>
<LI>Willing to be photographed, documented, and submitting a short paragraph at the end to help improve the next experience for future workshops. </LI>
