INTREPIDS is a visually striking body of work that explores individualism and quiet strength through contemporary portraiture. Lake’s subjects are from all walks of life and are rendered with a sense of reverence that challenges the viewer to find poetry in the commonplace.

Lake’s background in sign painting and murals is seen in his brushwork and his strong sense of composition. He uses decorative motifs that are a nod to Art Nouveau, while the emotional core of his work draws from the traditions of American illustration and classical realism.

The portraits in INTREPIDS are richly textured and often layered with subtle period-inspired designs. Set in ambiguous timeframes, each painting presents its subject with dignity and presence.

Working as a large-scale muralist and commercial artist for more than two decades, Lake’s current studio work allows him to focus on a softer, slower narrative while still retaining a strong impact.

All works will be available for purchase. Select pieces will include scannable QR codes linked to background stories and process videos.

SHANNON LAKE

Shannon Lake is a figurative artist and muralist based in Georgia. He has spent over 25 years crafting visual stories across the U.S. in the form of large-scale murals and interior artworks. Shannon grew up working in his father’s sign shop, where he developed a love for letterforms and bold visual communication. This background in hand-painted signs and illustration continues to inform his fine art today.

Lake’s current studio practice centers on contemporary oil painting grounded in classical technique. He draws his inspiration from the stylized work of the Art Nouveau movement, as well as the grit and narrative force of 20th-century American illustrators like Dean Cornwell and N.C. Wyeth. Combining decorative motifs with his subjects, he creates images that are both accessible and reverent. His work honors the individuality of everyday people, past and present.

His recent body of work, INTREPIDS, explores the quiet resilience of the human spirit, while elevating the familiar and romanticizing the mundane.

“I like to paint people in those quiet in-between moments. I want to observe what often goes unnoticed—the weight, the presence in what could seem commonplace—I use atmosphere and ornament to bring that forward,” says Lake. "At the end of the day, I’m still a sign painter at heart, trying to paint something honest, something readable.”
