The Austrian Cultural Forum Washington (ACF DC) serves as a focal point to promote Austrian culture and art in the Washington DC metro area. By organizing a variety of cultural events (concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, theatre performances, lectures and panel discussions) throughout the year, we aim at encouraging cultural exchange between Austrian and American artists and its audiences.

Join us for a unique live theatre performance of SHADOW. Eurydice says, an English stage adaption of the Nobel laureate <a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2004/jelinek/facts/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Elfriede Jelinek</a>'s critically acclaimed work. The play is produced by renowned Austrian director and Nestroy Theatre Prize winner Sabine Mitterecker and performed by the celebrated actress Alexandra Sommerfeld. Expect an outstanding theatre piece full of humour and ambiguity, composed in highly musical language. This evening was developed to celebrate Elfriede Jelinek's 75th birthday in 2021.Orpheus and Eurydice are the embodiment of lovers. As Eurydice dies prematurely bitten by a snake, Orpheus ventures into the underworld to bring her back to life, charming Hades with his music.But what happens, if Eurydice doesn't want to return? What if she refuses to be seen as the token of his love that he needs to redeem? What if she even discards the versions of female identity offered to her? Discards them like last season's clothes? Ancient Greek myth and modern female reality are closely intertwined in Elfriede Jelinek's text, addressing us through the perspective of an unexpected speaker. What if the object of desire itself raises her voice?The event is followed by a wine reception.*﻿***********Masks are optional at Austrian Cultural Forum events for visitors and staff. If you prefer to wear a mask, you are welcome to do so. Seating is not guaranteed.*﻿***********Latecomer Policy: Please be advised that no late seating can be offered once the event has started.*﻿**********Please note that photographs and footage will be taken throughout the event. These might be used by ACF DC for marketing and publicity in our publications, on our website and in social media, or in any third party publication. *﻿************Parking on International Court is available after 6:30 pm (for the duration of the event), or on 36th Street (access to the Embassy through the park behind the building). Van Ness Metro (Red Line) is a short distance away.
