Day 2 morning: UNIT 2

Overview of trauma, trauma and sexuality, trauma therapies, overview of trauma-informed care

Day 2 afternoon: UNIT 3

Milestones in healthy sexual development, signs of serious sexual concerns, responding to sexual incidents, trauma-informed mandatory reporting

Day 3 morning: UNIT 4

Talking about sex with teams, duty of care vs. dignity of risk, supported decision-making

Day 3 afternoon: Closing Session

About this event

T1: Foundations

Learn a broad set of tools to understand and support the sexual health, self-determination, and development of people you support. These tools are beneficial for anyone, and especially helpful for people who work with someone who experiences intellectual and/or developmental diversity.

Over this highly interactive, three-day training participants will:

  • Broaden their understanding of sexuality and how it impacts behavior
  • Identify healthy sexual behaviors; learn how to better respond to unhealthy, unsafe, and illegal behaviors
  • Recognize how trauma impacts sexuality and relationships
  • Utilize a framework for balancing risks, choice, and decision-making while supporting someone’s healthy sexual development
  • Use pro-active, preventative, and person-centered strategies in response to social-sexual issues

Sexual Self-Determination Certification Program

The Among Friends Sexual Self-Determination Certification Program is designed to build capacity for communities to respond to issues of sexual health and development in positive, proactive and person-centered ways, and to promote healthy sexuality and relationships for people with disabilities.

The certification program provides participants with opportunities to:

  • Learn about the basics of sexual health and development
  • Communicate with ease and professionalism about sexuality
  • Encourage healthy sexual expressions
  • Feel confident when supporting people who are engaging in challenging sexual behaviors
  • Provide specialized support for sexual health and healthy relationships to people with intellectual and/or developmental diversity

Program Outline and Details

The Sexual Self-determination certification program is comprised of 3 tiers. Tier 1 can be taken as a stand-alone training to strengthen your skills, or as the first part of the whole program. Tiers 2 and 3 are optional, depending on your interests and goals.
