SEVEN

The Global Women’s Institute (GWI) at the George Washington University launched in the Fall of 2012 as a university-wide initiative to advance gender equality through interdisciplinary research, education, and civic engagement. GWI serves as a catalyst for action, linking faculty and students with international researchers, practitioners, activists, and policymakers to end violence against women and girls, empower women economically, and increase women’s participation and leadership in society.

“Think global; act local” – Guided by this philosophy, The Power of Seven offers two nights of performance – SEVEN on April 27th and DC Seven on April 28th – which challenge us all to become catalysts for change in our community and in the world.

Seven is a documentary play based on the real life stories of seven women’s rights activists in the Vital Voices Global Leadership Network from Nigeria, Afghanistan, Guatemala, Russia, Pakistan, Northern Ireland and Cambodia.The play is presented as a reading, each time performed/read by seven new persons who lend their voices to the stories of these marginalized women. The readers represent different aspects of society, e.g. politicians, activists, athletes, journalists and survivors of domestic violence.
This performance and the touring concept was developed by Swedish producer Hedda Krausz Sjögren in cooperation with the National Touring Theatre (Riksteatern) and the Swedish Institute.  
The play was written in 2007 by playwrights Paula Cizmar, Catherine Filloux, Gail Kriegel, Carol K. Mack, Ruth Margraff, Anna Deavere Smith and Susan Yankowitz in partnership with the Vital Voices Global Partnership.

 What inspires a person to become an activist? Focusing on local organizations, including Identity, JCADA, Sasha Bruce Youthwork, Street Sense, Tahirih, FAIR Girls, and The George Washington University’s SASA, the play DC Seven highlights women who are combatting sexual assault, domestic violence, sex trafficking, and other injustices and abuses here in the Washington, DC region. Devised from interviews with leaders in these organizations, DC Seven explores the different ways in which women become agents of change.
