Ann Martin Center is a non-profit community clinic that provides psychotherapy, educational therapy, and diagnostic (educational and psychological) testing to youth and adults. We are dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children, youth, and their families in Alameda County. At our clinic in Emeryville and in eleven Oakland school-based programs, we reach over 1,000 youth through 28,000 treatment hours annually. The Center is distinguished by its emphasis on both emotional and educational support. Target Audience: Preschool and Early Elementary Parents
Are power struggles with your child leaving you annoyed or exhausted? Are you wondering why your child just can’t seem to listen? Are your own frustrations spilling over at home?  Every child has off-track moments—refusing to brush his teeth, being rough with the family pet, ignoring instructions, pestering her sibling. With conventional limit-setting techniques, these kinds of smaller difficulties can sometimes escalate into mounting stress on all sides.  Whether you’re simply seeking fresh ideas, or you and your child are locked in a mystifying struggle, this workshop will provide insights and strategies to help you set firm, warm limits in a way that connects you and your child and fosters cooperation in your family. You’ll discover why limits are vital to young people and you’ll learn a three-step method that will help you say “no” without anger and shaming.  This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers of children eight and under.
 Julie Johnson has been in the field of education for over twenty years as a teacher, trainer, and researcher.  She has taught middle and high school students, provided professional development for teachers and administrators, conducted research in classroom and school settings, and led support groups for adolescents and parents.  She has a Masters in Education and was certified by Hand in Hand Parenting to teach Parenting by Connection—an emotion-based, trauma informed parenting program.  Julie currently conducts classes and consultations for parents and practitioners throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and via phone and Internet.
