Join StartOut for an inspiring day of service and community at the National AIDS Memorial Grove in San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Park. This unique event combines the spirit of volunteerism with an opportunity to connect with fellow StartOut members and learn about an important part of our history.

When & Where:

The volunteer day begins at 8:30 AM, with sign-in located at the (outer) East end of the Grove on Bowling Green Drive. We encourage the use of ride share and public transportation. A map and directions will be provided upon registration.

What to Expect:

Your day will start with a nourishing breakfast of coffee, juices, bagels, and fruit. At 9:00 AM, we'll gather for a brief yet insightful introduction to the Grove's history, presented by a distinguished member of the National AIDS Memorial board or staff. Following this, we will divide into teams (StartOut Members will be on the same team) to commence various projects around the Grove, guided by experienced gardeners and team leaders.

Before we wrap up the physical work at 11:45 AM, we'll have “Circle Time” at noon. This is a moment for announcements, recognizing our sponsors and volunteer groups, and a solemn moment of silence in memory of those we've lost to AIDS.

What's Provided:

All volunteers will be provided with breakfast items, lunch, snacks, beverages, gloves, and tools. For your comfort and safety, we suggest wearing sturdy shoes (no open toe shoes), sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat or cap, and sturdy clothing (jeans and long-sleeved shirts are recommended due to areas with poison oak and prickly plants).

Requirements:

All participants must sign a Community Workday Release form. Volunteers under 18 must have this form signed by a parent or guardian. Forms will be available at the registration table, or you can bring a signed copy with you.

Rainy Weather Policy:

In case of uncertain weather conditions, please email Steve Sagaser at ssagaser@aidsmemorial.org on the morning of the event to verify if it has been canceled.

This service day is not just about volunteering; it's a chance to connect with others, learn about the ongoing fight against AIDS, and contribute to a meaningful cause. We look forward to seeing you there for a day of service, history, and community.

STARTOUT COVID-19 POLICY:

If you are feeling under the weather, please do not attend the event.

We encourage all attendees to be vaccinated or take a COVID test before attending to ensure they are negative.

If you are more comfortable wearing a mask at the event, we invite you to do so. If you chose not to wear a mask, we ask that you respect the decision of others to wear theirs.
