Paper Microscopes

Taught by Corinne Takara

What would you look at in nature if you had a portable microscope? Come make a lightweight paper microscope to carry with you in your pocket or purse. Design and engineer your microscope with easily accessible materials like index cards, LED lights, copper tape and a plexiglass sphere. Examine the natural world in new ways and with a new micro view easily at hand. There is no one correct way to design a paper microscope, so come invent a design that works for you!

This journey includes exploring compliant mechanisms, track design, and paper circuitry and was inspired by the Foldscope: https://www.foldscope.com/.

Make-HER workshops are open to girls aged 8 - 12 and their mothers (or other adult female mentors). Our #LadyMaker educators have designed content specifically for this age group. Therefore the workshops are not appropriate for those under age eight, please no younger siblings. You may cancel up to 48 hours in advance through this site. Those who do not show without cancellation may be prevented from registering for subsequent Make-HER workshops.

Each workshop requires a separate registration. Each registration reserves spots for both you and your daughter. If you have more than one daughter aged 8-12, please complete only ONE registration, put both daughters' first names in the name field, and list the younger daughter's age when asked. Please do not register friends for this mother/daughter program.
