Event Details

Imagine a community where schools and families partner together to best support children’s education, where parents and guardians ask questions to actively participate in decisions that affect their children, and where educators help parents build these fundamental skills in order to forge effective partnerships. In this one-day seminar, led by Right Question Institute's Co-Director and co-author of Partnering with Parents to Ask the Right Questions (ASCD) Luz Santana, you will learn core principles and simple, effective methods you can implement immediately to strengthen partnerships between schools and students’ families. This active learning session builds skills in using this practical strategy.

The Right Question Strategy (RQS) distills key theories and ideas about best practices for working with families into a teaching strategy that can be integrated into and enhance the many different ways schools and educators engage families. Here are examples of statements parents have made after learning the strategy, where they learned to do the following:

  • “Communicate better with my child’s teachers.”
  • “Have a plan of action when it comes to my child’s education.”
  • “Monitor my child’s education more closely and ask questions to obtain answers.”
  • “Como debo hacer las preguntas y participar antes de que se tomen las decisiones.” (How I should ask questions and participate before decisions are made.)

Educators who use the strategy as part of their work with parents say that RQS:

  • “Gives parents a greater voice, empowers parents, and values their thinking.”
  • “Allows for a deeper, more formal look at what parents truly want and need from me as an educator.”
  • “Is more parent centered. It includes and takes direction from the parents.”
  • “[Can be used] at Title I meetings to keep parents learning about how the school is a community always directed towards the students.”

The day will include active-learning opportunities and specific skill-building exercises so that you will be able to implement the strategy immediately. There are many ways the strategy can be used by a wide range of school staff. This includes individual teachers having one-on-one meetings with parents, school counselors or parent liaisons meeting with individuals and small groups of parents, Title I staff engaging more parents more effectively, staff working with parents in IEP meetings, and administrators at the school and district level communicating and collaborating more effectively with families.

At the end of the day, people will walk away inspired and excited, with a clear plan and the ability to immediately implement the strategy in their schools and communities.
