Rubiksis one of Melbourne’s most dynamic contemporary art music ensembles, bringing together some of Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers. Since debuting in 2015, the ensemble has been hailed as “a formidable contribution to Australia’s growing community of contemporary music makers” (Partial Durations) and commended for their “incredibly personal, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” performances (Limelight Magazine). With a particular interest in storytelling and cross-art collaboration, Rubiks has quickly established a reputation for excellence, delighting audiences with their unique programming and dazzling virtuosity.Formed at the Australian National Academy of Music, the musicians of Rubiks have collectively appeared in festivals including the Sydney and Melbourne International Arts Festivals, Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music, Bang on a Can Festival, Eighth Blackbird Creative Lab, Port Fairy Spring Music Festival and Huntington Estate Music Festival.Rubiks recently launched the ‘Pythia Prize’, a new commission project that will annually see an Australian female composer collaborate with Rubiks to create a new work.In 2018, Rubiks will perform twice at the Melbourne Recital Centre, as featured artists in the Metropolis Festival and the Extended Play Festival. Rubiks will also make their first international appearances, performing throughout Germany, the United Kingdom and The Netherlands.

In second self, Rubiks Collective takes a journey to the other side of the looking glass, where the boundaries between the public and private, the sane and the mad, the truth and the mask melt away. Who are you, and who do you want to be? A study of how we understand ourselves and others, second self takes us from the golden age of Hollywood to notorious psychological experiments as identities multiply, transform, evolve, seduce and deceive. Special guest mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean joins Rubiks for this deliriously alluring program,eaturing the Australian premieres of works by Jacob TV, David Bird, Missy Mazzoli and Andy Akiho.
