As a Microsoft Certified Master/Microsoft Certified Solutions Master and SQL Server MVP, I have 19 years’ experience in the technology industry, including more than 10 with SQL Server. I also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Information Systems from Utah State University. One of the highlights of my career was co-authoring SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Recipes: A Problem-Solution Approach. I am a frequent presenter at SQL Server events worldwide, which includes SQLSaturdays and User Groups.

I am pleased to announce a free community event. The week of PASS Summit, a few friends have agreed to come together and host a day of training. This is an event for all data professionals who happen to be in the area the days leading up to Summit but may not be able to attend one of the<A HREF="http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2016/Sessions/PreConference.aspx" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Summit Precons</A>.  Here are the details for the workshops we will be presenting. All ticket sales are final and non-refundable.
We invite you to attend a day of training presented by this ragtag group of friends. Among us you will find four MCMs, 4 MVPs, and Friends of RedGate. There will be six sessions with a lunch break during the day. While the training is free, we do ask a cover charge for the lunch. The lunch will be $25 per person.
Important: We understand many may not be able to attend an entire day due to meetings or travel or what have you. If you can only attend for half the day or just one session, please don't hesitate to stop in. PowerBI, from a DBA
 Microsoft’s PowerBI is the new hotness. In this session, you will get your hands dirty and dive into PowerBI and create an actual report, with actual data. You will get to learn from examples from what a DBA has done to implement PowerBI in his shop and make his data accessible.
As a DBA, we often need to collect and display data in a friendly and interactive fashion. We will play with some PowerShell to collect data from several systems, store this data in an Azure DB in the Cloud, then point PowerBI at this data to display and interact with said data. You will learn a little about PowerShell, Azure SQL DB, PowerBI, and how to make these work for you.
You will be given permissions to an Azure DB, and get connected to this source. You will also need to have PowerBI desktop downloaded and installed. We will be using this to create the report during the session. So please come prepared to interact with the internet, with a cloud-based database you will be provided, and <A HREF="http://sqlpass.us6.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=5a9ce1032f7f24d92d0a734b4&id=2b356d41db&e=4458525b1e" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">PowerBI Desktop</A>.
An Introduction to SQL 2016's Temporal Tables
Have you ever wanted to know how the data in a table looked at a specific point-in-time? Well, now you can! SQL Server 2016 just introduced Temporal Tables. In this presentation, we’ll dive into what they are, how they work and what they can offer you.
Why are we waiting?
While the waits and queues performance tuning methodology is well known, there can be some confusion still about what various waits mean and what, if anything, needs to be done about them.
In this session we’ll take a dive into the SQL Server execution model and see why waits occur, and then look at some common waits and see what causes them and what they mean.
Impact Analysis - Discovering the true impact of database changes
DBAs are constantly barraged with suggestions for improving their system.  Maybe it's a new trace flag, partitioning scheme, or a high-availability solution.  Every change, whether large or small, will impact performance making it either better or worse.  But how can we know whether the impact will be large or small?  Research can provide you with some data (e.g. "mirroring has a negligible performance impact on the principal"), but how small is "negligible", and since every business has different requirements, what if that "negligible" impact is still more than you are able to afford?
In this session, we will review how Microsoft's DReplay tool can be used to baseline performance characteristics and evaluate the impact of database changes.  We'll show how to set up and configure DReplay properly, and how to correctly analyze the results.  At the end of the session you will know how to use DReplay in your environment to confidently measure the impact of database changes.
From on-prem to Azure Sql Data Warehouse using Redgate Data Platform Studio
Azure SQL Data Warehouse is a powerful, massively parallel work horse that can vastly improve the performance of your long running queries. It can, however, be a challenging, time-consuming process, with many iterations to work out the best/optimal options for getting your data from an on-prem SQL Server into Azure. In this session we will talk through the current options available and how Redgate Data Platform Studio takes care of all the gotchas in other methods and simplifies the whole process into a few clicks.

Jason Brimhall has 10+ yrs experience and has worked with SQL Server from 6.5 through SQL 2014. He has experience in performance tuning, high transaction environments, and with very large environments. He is currently a consultant specializing in performance tuning, server analysis and problem resolution.  Jason is a Microsoft Certified Master(MCM) and Microsoft MVP for the Data Platform. He has also been the VP of the Las Vegas User Group (SSSOLV).
Wayne Sheffield, a Microsoft Certified Master in SQL Server, started working with xBase databases in the late 80's. With over 20 years in IT, he has worked with SQL Server (since 6.5 in the late 90's) in various dev/admin roles, with an emphasis in performance tuning. He is the author of several articles at www.sqlservercentral.com, a co-author of SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Recipes, and enjoys sharing his knowledge by presenting at SQL PASS events and blogging at http://blog.waynesheffield.com/wayne
Grant Fritchey, is a Data Platform MVP with over 20 years’ experience in IT, including time spent in support and development. He has worked with SQL Server since 6.0 back in 1995. He has also developed in VB, VB.NET, C#, and Java. Grant has written books for Apress and Simple-Talk. Grant presents at conferences and user groups, large and small, all over the world. He joined Redgate Software as a product evangelist in January 2011.
TJay Belt is a Professional Database Administrator and has been developing his expertise since 2000. He has been working in IT since 1994. He enjoys delivering technical presentations and has presented for Microsoft, Professional Association for SQL Server, SQL Server Worldwide User Group, PASS SQL Saturday events, and local SQL Server User groups. TJay has published technical articles for SQL Server Central, Simple Talk, SQL-Server-Performance. He is the founder and was the leader of the PASS chapter SQL Server user group in Utah County. TJay has volunteered as a Chapter leader for PASS, Regional Mentor for PASS chapters, PASS Chapter Committee, was the founder of the Auditing &amp; Compliance Special Interest Group with PASS. TJay currently volunteers as a Regional Mentor for PASS chapters. TJay is also an outdoorsman who enjoys riding dirtbikes, waterskiing/boating, playing racquetball and spending time with his family.
Chad Crawford has been working with database engines for 18 years and filled a variety of roles spanning architecture, development and administration. He is currently the Database Architect at Henry Schein Practice Solutions where he is responsible for the database backend for their SAAS product.  He loves teaching and sharing new ideas and developed an internal training course to help developers prepare for the Microsoft exams while completing his MCM Certification.  When he isn’t optimizing a query, you will find him running, dreaming about airplanes, or looking for a new strategy board game.
Gail Shaw is a Database Specialist focusing on database performance tuning and database recovery, with a particular interest in topics such as indexing strategies, execution plans, and writing T-SQL code that performs well and scales gracefully.
Gail holds a Microsoft Certified Master certification for SQL Server 2008 and is a Data Platform MVP. She is a frequent poster on the SQL Server Central forums, writes articles for both SQLServerCentral.com and Simple-Talk.com, and has spoken at SQL Saturdays locally and internationally, SQL Bits and at the PASS Community Summit.
Gail has been responsible for extending the lifespan of many an application by performance-tuning their databases as well as providing technical guidance on all things SQL Server related.
She lives in Johannesburg, South Africa.
