SCRIPT SALON: the collaborative screenwriting class
In these café-style sessions, learn how to refine your idea and master complex visual storytelling tools, with likeminded writers.
Drop into any class to receive professional writing advice, develop your own practice, and connect with fellow storytellers.
• About your tutor:
Having taught screenwriting at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels (including at the University of Warwick's lauded Writing Programme) Flavia has designed these robust & collaborative workshops to break down narrative devices like plot, character, dialogue, dramatisation, and filmmaking tools - in an inclusive and supportive setting.
Flavia is a creative producer and a practicing writer and director, having made her feature film Beautiful in the Morning (distributed by Herflix) and currently developing a slate of film & TV scripts which have gained support (most notably from the prestigious Athena Writers Lab). She earned a BFA from Tisch School of the Arts, and was mentored by auteurs Noah Baumbach & Cedric Klapisch, and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (on Alejandro Inarritu's Birdman).
• Session structure:
Every week, we delve into a different topic such as plot structure & the hero's journey, character development, point of view, mystery & suspense, comedy writing, etc. During each session we pay particular attention to screenplay format best practices, and dedicate time for in-session writing & feedback.
You can be a novice looking for bite-size ways into writing for film, a seasoned pro looking to revise script fundamentals, or a working writer needing a creative environment to pen a new draft.
If you come into a session with a particular writing challenge you wish to address, then we will cover it through the lens of this week's theme.

Agenda
-
Screenplay Structure
We will begin by introducing where we are in our writing journey, and what our goals are for this session. Then, we will discuss screenplay structure tips so that everyone feels confident in writing in script format. There is so much to learn here alone, so every week new tools will be explored. Throughout this practical task, we will also discuss the value of visual storytelling, the power that film has on audiences worldwide, and the importance of crafting your unique voice.
-
Storytelling Device
We will now dive into this week's theme, whether it's character development, the hero's journey, dramatic irony, or suspense. Within each theme, other elements will be touched on to support this discussion. At this stage, we recommend you share your idea or piece of writing, so that we can directly apply techniques to your personal work. This group setting is a safe space to explore works in progress, and you will benefit from live feedback from peers. We will end this section with dedicated writing time.

Packaging Your Script
We will end the session looking at where to take your idea to the next level. If you're at idea stage, perhaps you should write a full synopsis detailing your beginning, middle, and end. If you have a draft, perhaps you should focus on revisiting Act II. If you're thinking of reordering your script, you might need a beat-sheet to understand each plot point. This is the beginning of how to take your screenplay, or idea, to market. If you're returning from a previous week, we will be revising your materials for further editing. See you in class!
