SCDT’s HATCHERY YOUNG ARTIST PERFORMANCE PROJECT is a celebration of live performance, spotlighting the essential voices of young artists during these times of struggle, change, and growth in our world. Hatchery returns to SCDT’s Home base- A.P.E.’s WORKROOM THEATER to bring an inspiring INTERDISCIPLINARY show to our beloved Western MA community! Featuring works by guest artists Katherine Kain, Joya Powell, and Sofia Engelman, Lindsay Jennings, and Em Papineau, and Hatchery Artists: Arin Andrews, Maisie Tuck, Jamie Hougen-Smith, Morgan Brown McNeil, Dayal Fuller, Yelena Caldanaro, Cara Casey, Edy Savage, Tovah Boucher, Sophie Calkins, Ana Forrest, and the Hatchery Pit Band.

HATCHERY

SCDT’s Hatchery YOUNG ARTISTS PERFORMANCE PROJECT is an experimental movement/music based program for young artists. Hatchery has grown and is now able to offer THREE DISTINCT PROGRAMS FOR AGES 10-18! HATCHERY DANCE COMPANY: A pre professional performance company for ages 13-18 HATCHLINGS: A pre professional performance company, working with Hatchery and on their own, ages 10-12 HATCHERY PIT BAND & Production Team: A pre professional group working with music/video design, production and creation Unique in the Pioneer Valley, SCDT's Hatchery program offers opportunities for teens to work closely with internationally acclaimed guest artists to create choreographic works or simply to take class. Hatchery makes spaces for young artists to share their stories, and develop their creative voices and collaborative skills and develop lasting creative collaborative relationships, offer workshops on skill building around all aspects of performance art, foster diversity, and most importantly; platform the teen creative voice.


Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Katherine Kain (she/they) is a choreographer and dancer based in western Massachusetts. She grew up dancing at South Valley Creative Dance and received subsequent training from Repertory Dance Theatre and Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company. They have also trained extensively at Bates Dance Festival, Salt Dance Fest, FRESH Festival, and the Practicing Presence Festival. Katherine’s work has been presented at the American College Dance Association conference, the Josten Library for the Performing Arts, and the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought. They have performed in works by Paul Matteson, Dante Brown, and Doug Varone. Most recently, she was dancing with Shakia “The Key” Barron and Barbie Diewald in their project, “Concourse,” which has been in residence at Jacob’s Pillow, High Street Studios, MAGMA, and Bates Dance Festival. Katherine graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Dance from Mount Holyoke College. They also spent this past year developing their teaching practice at The Children’s Ballet and Movement Co. and are excited to join the faculty at SCDT this spring.


A multiethnic Harlemite, Joya Powell is a Bessie Award winning Choreographer and Educator passionate about community, activism, and dances of the African Diaspora. Hailed by The New York Times as a “radiant performer,” throughout her career she has danced with choreographers such as Paloma McGregor, Katiti King, Nicole Stanton, Neta Pulvermacher, and Mar Parrilla. In 2005 Joya founded Movement of the People Dance Company, dedicated to addressing sociocultural injustices through multidisciplinary Afrofuturist immersive contemporary dance. Her work has appeared in venues such as: BAM, Lincoln Center, SummerStage, Harlem Stage Gatehouse, La Mama, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, The Dance Complex (Cambridge), Mudlark Theater (New Orleans), Movement Research @ Judson Church, The School of Contemporary Dance & Thought (Northampton), BAAD! among others. In addition to being a performance-based company, MOPDC facilitates community engagements nationally and internationally, and they hold an annual Free Day of Dance and acclaimed Winter Intensive. Joya has choreographed such Off-Broadway plays as: Fit for a Queen by Betty Shamieh (The Classical Theatre of Harlem), JOB by Thomas Bradshaw (The FLEA Theater), Ducklings by Amina Henry (JACK), Songs About Trains by Beto O’Byrne (The New Ohio Theatre). As well as regional theater productions including: The Brothers Size by Tarell Alvin McCraney (Luna Stage, NJ), and Une Tempête by Aimé Césaire (The American Shakespeare Center, VA). Her chapters "How do you hold when you need to be held?: Dance and the embodied practice of grieving," and "A Grooveology: Reflections on Dance within Your Dance," are featured in Pandemic Performance: Resilience, Liveness, and Protest in Quarantine Times – Routledge, edited by Kendra Capece & Patrick Scorese and in Write Your Future, edited by Pepatián, respectively. Her research led her to teach and study in Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, France, and Canada. Awards and recognition include: The Outstanding Emerging Choreographer Bessie Award, Dancing While Black Fellow, Women in Motion Commissioned Artist, EtM Choreographers + Composers Residency, Angela’s Pulse’s North Star Arts Incubator, CUNY Dance Initiative AIR, The Unsettling Dramaturgy Award. She is a collaborating member of Dance Caribbean Collective, Radical Evolution and is a co-leader of Angela’s Pulse’s Dancing While Black. She is also an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Dance and African-American Studies at Wesleyan University.

THE SCHOOL FOR CONTEMPORARY DANCE & THOUGHT (SCDT) is comprised of independent, internationally experienced teaching artists who embrace multiplicity, arouse curiosity, and emphasize personal choice. Central to SCDT's mission is an abiding respect for the traditions, histories, and evolution of dance and performance with the directive to continue challenging established ideals. SCDT serves as a hub by maintaining space for process-based art that connects local and international communities.

SCDT offers adult and youth programming in dance training that includes modern, ballet, and improvisational techniques. The school creates a space for the creative process by regularly curating performances and workshops with established international performance practitioners. SCDT works collaboratively with the Five College Dance department, Middlebury College Dance, and APE and the Northampton Community Arts Trust.

ABOUT HATCHERY

The School for Contemporary Dance & Thought is proud to present a dance company for exceptional teens who love dance, ages 13-18. Hatchery offers dance training in contemporary techniques with an emphasis on developing the choreographic voice.

Hatchery prepares young dancers from diverse backgrounds for the versatile demands of a professional career, both inside and outside the studio. In addition to studying with internationally acclaimed artists, members will choreograph their own work, receive mentorship from experts in the field, and create dynamic, inspiring performance for the Pioneer Valley.

Hatchery offers creative teens who love to dance a supportive environment where enthusiasm and curiosity are just as important as technique! Hatchery has performed at Jacob's Pillow and worked with professionals such as Raja Feather Kelly, Stuart Singer, Shakia Johnson, Shura Baryshnikov, La Alternativa (Kathleen Hermesdorf & Albert Mathias), and many more.
