In July 2020 Miami Biscayne Bay was quite literally gasping for air. Local news and social media were flooded with images of dead fish floating across the bay and littering our shores and marine life struggling to breathe. Florida International University scientists reported oxygen levels down to 0 (zero) for up to five hours; fireboats were oxygenating water around Morningside Park, the 79th Street causeway, and other locations where the worst of the fish kill had been reported by the public. Biscayne Bay has reached its tipping point: pollution from sewage leaks, septic tanks, fertilizers, and stormwater runoff, along with the record high temperatures in the lower 90s is killing seagrass and marine life at an unprecedented rate.Quinaz Studio, led by artist/designer James Quinaz, has partnered with ARTSail Residency and Research Initiative to organize a panel discussion with experts, advocates, business leaders and cultural producers who will share their profound knowledge of the issues that caused last year catastrophe, and help us all understand what communities and individuals can do to prevent this tragedy from happening again.Speakers: Irela Bagué, Chief Bay Officer; marathon runner and environmental activist, Andrew Otazo; Patrick Shearer, engineer and activist with e-Sciences; Adam Steckley, Co-Founder of Blue Scholars Initiative; James Quinaz, artist/designer; moderated by Ombretta Agró Andruff, Executive Director, ARTSailSUGGESTED DONATION $3 TO HELP FURTHER ARTSail MISSION TO FACILITATE COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN ARTISTS, SCIENTISTS, MARINE EXPERTS AND ACTIVISTS IN THE CREATION OF ARTWORK WITH ENDURING ADVOCACY VALUE.
