About this event

  • 3 hours

Saturday kayakers will meet at Laurel Hill at 9:30am for a 10am departure.

Not a group member, that's OK! This link is for you!
Make new friend(s) in this non-guided group and head out to explore the Sawmill Creek Marsh, Anderson Creek Marsh & other great wildlife areas. Enjoy a heron’s eye view of our amazing urban wilderness!

Your group of new friends can paddle together up and down the river, or venture out back into the grasslands through the meandering channels. Enjoy wildlife-watching, scenic views and tranquility in this unique urban wilderness. View the Manhattan skyline from a unique perspective: with a thousand acres of protected wetlands in the foreground!

At High tide, your group will enjoy exploring the Sawmill Creek Marsh. Kayakers adventuring during high tide will be able to paddle into the many meandering creeks and channels that are usually inaccessible during low tide.

During Low tide, you can seek out some of the common (and not-so-common) wildlife species of the Meadowlands. Expect to see herons, egrets, sandpipers, plovers, waterfowl, raptors and wrens. You’ll also have a good chance to spot muskrats and crabs in the creeks, and terrapins basking on the mudflats.

Binoculars are available to borrow! Maps will be provided for your non-guided journey.
Bring your cell phone, the GPS works in the marshlands and the blue dot will follow you.
Cell phone dry bags are available to borrow or purchase.

REMEMBER TO STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP. SOLO PADDLING IS NOT PERMITTED ON TIHS STRETCH OF THE RIVER.

You can download the Laurel Hill Paddling waiver here.

Frequently asked questions

What if I'm the only one to sign up for a particular date?

If you're the only one signed up that day (we hope not!) we'll reach out to you to see if you want to transfer to another day. Or - you'll get lucky and one of our guides will join you on your tour!

Can I go with a member friend?

Of course! The more the merrier. The member should choose this same date as you. There is an option for them to add you on to their ticket if the two of you want to go together in a tandem.

Are there singles and tandems available?

Yes, we have both singles and tandems available.

Isn't the Laurel Hill paddling center open every weekend anyway?

Yes. The purpose of this page is to help solo and single people join up with a group and meet new friends. If you have partners to paddle with already, you can always just walk up and rent any time we're open, during our regular business hours.

Organized by

Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper is the leading environmental organization working on Hackensack River issues. The group engages in a fourfold strategy of environmental action, advocacy, education and enforcement in its work to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River Watershed. Our ongoing efforts mean protected wetlands, cleanups of toxic sites, restored habitats, better public access, and a new appreciation for the “River of Many Bends”!
