A series of workshops blending crafts and African culture. These workshops aim to reclaim lost lessons of sewing, textiles, and natural dye
Brought to you by Red Rice Books and Funky Sweatshop
This second installation of Sankofa Crafts is inspired by the legendary quilters of Gee’s Bend and the improvisational brilliance of the Gee’s Bend Quilters, this workshop invites participants to create small quilt squares using reclaimed textiles—aprons, flour sacks, tablecloths, and worn garments.
Participants will learn how Gee’s Bend quilts were born from necessity, isolation, and deep creativity, transforming scrap cloth into bold visual language. The session emphasizes improvisation, asymmetry, and intuitive design as acts of resourcefulness and self-definition.
