An Introduction to Stay Active & Independent for Life: An Evidence-based Intervention for Preventing Falls in Older Adults

This class is open to all healthcare professionals including EMS, nursing, and any/all ancillary staff to develop an evidence-based fall prevention program within your institution.

Description of Class

Preventing falls in older adults is at the forefront of our national health care agendas, as seen by the development of the Falls Free™ National Action Plan by the National Council on Aging, and the Center for Healthy Aging. Research has shown that an exercise program that includes aerobics, strengthening, and balance components is effective in preventing falls in older adults. The “Stay Active and Independent for Life” (SAIL) Program is an evidence-based intervention for prevention of falls. The SAIL Program includes a fitness class designed especially for older adults, as well as educational materials and self-assessments. This class provides an overview of the SAIL Program, and provides the attendees with a plan for setting up and leading a SAIL Program in their organization and community.

Attendance Policy

Attendees will receive a completion certificate for 7.5 contact hours. Attendees who arrive late or leave early will receive an amended certificate indicating the actual number of hours earned. The amended certificate will be sent to the attendee by postal mail within one week following the seminar.

Notes

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a live demonstration of the SAIL fitness class immediately prior to lunch. Please dress appropriately for participation in the class, or bring a change of clothes. Attendees who do not wish to participate in the fitness class will be asked to sit and observe the class.

Please bring a bottle of water to class; all persons participating in the fitness class are required to have a bottle of water available to them.
