S-130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter Training 2017

The Natural Areas Training Academy (NATA) conducts workshopson sustainable management of natural areas in the Southeastern US.  Workshops aretaughtbyworking natural resource professionalstoother professionals inthe natural resources field and anyone else interested in furthering their understanding of sustainable land managment, including site assessment, managing for diversity, prescribed burning, planning for visitors and volunteers, and collaboration.

<H2>Training Course: S-130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter</H2>
 
This course is designed to provide entry-level firefighter skills, and is often required for participation in prescribed burning activities. Participants will receive federally-recognized NWCG certificates for S130, S190, and L180.
Course topics include:
<UL>
<LI>Proper tactics to extinguish fire with or without the use of water</LI>
<LI>Why lookouts, communications, escape routes, and safety zones are important</LI>
<LI>The primary factors affecting the start and spread of wildfire</LI>
<LI>How to recognize potentially hazardous situations</LI>
<LI>Environmental factors of fuels, weather, and topography that affect the spread of wildland fire</LI>

Presented in a hybrid format (both the online and in-person trainings are required)
 
Online trainings: Prior to the in-person training, participants MUST complete two self-paced online trainings:
<UL>
<LI>The <A HREF="http://training.fema.gov/is/courseoverview.aspx?code=IS-100.b" TARGET="_blank" TITLE="FEMA IS-100" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">FEMA IS-100 course online</A> (2-4 hours of training; must bring proof of completion on Aug 15, 2017)</LI>

<LI>The S-190 course (6-8 hours of training, link provided on July 31, 2017; test to be taken on first day of in-person training).</LI>
</UL>
 In-person training:
<UL>
<LI>Classroom: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday (8/15, 8/16, 8/18) will consist of classroom instruction (9am-5pm, we'll finish early on Friday) at the Waccasassa Forestry Center in Gainesville, FL</LI>
</UL>
<UL>
<LI>Field: Thursday (8/17) will be an all-day field training (8am-5pm) at Ordway-Swisher Biological Station in Melrose, FL. Transportation is provided, departing from the classroom. </LI>
</UL>

Classroom training:

<LI>IS-100 Completion certificate</LI>
<LI>Lunch (lunch is only provided on Thursday)</LI>

Field training:

<LI>6 inch or higher leather boots</LI>
<LI CLASS="list_content_bold">Leather gloves</LI>
<LI CLASS="list_content_bold">PPE (optional: if you have it, please bring it!)</LI>
</UL>

Participants are responsible for bringing their own sack lunch on the classroom training days (Tu, We, Fr) - there are NOT any dining options nearby. Coffee, water, and snacks will also be provided throughout the training. On the field day (THUR only) lunch will be provided by NATA.

Must be processed through the Eventbrite website at the time of registration, there are 2 payment options:

Pay with a CREDIT CARD online at the time of registration on the Eventbrite website; the confirmation email contains your reciept.

Pay by CHECK* via mail by requesting an INVOICE at the time of registration on the Eventbrite site (the invoice will be emailed to you within 3 days; the payment is due within 10 days and no later than July 17th).

*If you intend to pay by credit card, do NOT select the invoice option - those selecting the invoice option that later wish to pay by credit card will be required to re-register and will be placed on the waitlist if the course is at capacity.
