Description

Rx for Science Literacy has partnered with FoodMASTER, an NIH SEPA-funded resource for middle grade science classrooms. FoodMASTER Middle Science is a 10-unit resource using food as a tool to teach hands-on, minds on science to 7th- and 8th-grade students. Participants will experience the FoodMASTER approach while completing scientific inquiry learning labs and exploring ways to incorporate FoodMASTER materials into the middle grades science classroom.

The classroom-tested resource features 25 hands-on laboratory experiences and 12 health-focused extension activities. Each chapter provides users with hands-on, application-based activities, detailed procedures, science concepts to be emphasized, materials needed, critical thinking exercises and background knowledge with instructions for educators. Lab experiences and extension activities were designed so teachers in any classroom environment can implement them without the need for specific laboratory space.

Each lesson is aligned with the North Carolina Essential Science Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards.

Workshop participants will receive a copy of the teacher's manual, a supply starter kit and online access to all resource materials, including supplemental instructional videos.

This workshop is open only to middle school science teachers in North Carolina.

The workshop is co-sponsored by Carolinas HealthCare System.
