Maybe it made him love music, taught him to pay attention to sound, to how cardboard rubbed together can become an instrument, how an acoustic sound can be stretched out and turned to near liquid—a thing you could float in— how stacking delay pedals at random can scramble the smoothness of a song and make something known, unknown. The ordinary, cosmic. And maybe that trumpet had nothing to do with it at all. Probably not. It’s hard to know, really, what’s made us who we are now, and anyways, that was years and years ago.</p>

They debuted their hushed, twang-inflected indie rock on Years in 2018. Their second album, the more fully arranged Somewhere, followed in 2021.</p><p>Both then-recent graduates of colleges in the Northeast, singer Laura Colwell and guitarist Stephen Salisbury first met in Austin as editorial crew members of the Terrence Malick film Song to Song. Finding inspiration in the city's bustling music scene, where there were always instruments nearby, they formed Sun June with lead guitarist Michael Bain, bassist Justin Harris, and drummer Sarah Schultz. Recorded live to tape with co-producer Evan Kasper, their dusky debut album, Years, appeared on Keeled Scales in 2018. They followed it with Younger, an EP of Years demos and B-sides, in 2019.</p><p>The group recorded their second full-length with producer Danny Reisch, who added touches of synths and percussion to already fuller band arrangements, which included Colwell on guitar for the first time. Titled Somewhere, it was released jointly by Keeled Scales and Run for Cover Records in early 2021.</p>

On his excellent debut LP “I Looked Out”, Gregs’s voice takes center stage, creaking, crooning, and cutting through clouds of static. The songs are linked together by a palpable urgency, whether it is the punch-in-the-face, careening momentum of “Tower,” the country-gazing guitar squall of “Souvenir Heart,” or the singalong finale of “Palms.” Careful arrangements and production choices bring out the best of the 7-piece band that ornament the album with pedal steel, horns, eerie strings, and tape warbles. Greg’s strong narrative songwriting is equally effective chronicling the demise of a 1920s ocean liner as it is documenting his own interpersonal uncertainties. The sounds on the record conjure up the feeling of driving around Chittenden County in the middle of winter, high beams on, slush on the floor mats. It’s hard for me to imagine a more promising debut record, and I can’t wait to see where this band goes next.</p>
