Come out to Wheaton Regional Park for TASSC's first annual Run for Strength, a 5k and 1 mile run and walk to support the Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition (TASSC) International. Meet and run with TASSC staff, supporters and survivors, including elite Ethiopian runners who were forced to flee their home countries after being persecuted by the government. Festivities, refreshments provided by Mama Lucia and Bethesda Bagel, music, a raffle (tickets are $5 or 5 for $20) and mingling will immediately follow the run. If you can't make the event and you still want to support TASSC, feel free to sign up as a virtual runner, donate directly on our website, or join as a spectator and help cheer for the runners and take part in the post-run celebration! Registration will be available onsite for $30, and credit cards and cash will be accepted.
Proceeds from Run for Strength will benefit the survivors of torture TASSC serves each year. Among the many free services TASSC offers to survivors are psychological counselling, a and massage therapy, social services, workforce development training, and legal support as survivors seek asylum in the US. TASSC currently provides holistic services to 330 survivors annually, fulfilling its mission to end the practice of torture wherever it occurs and to support survivors as they empower themselves, their families and communities wherever they are. Since 1998, TASSC has helped over 7,000 survivors rebuild their lives through in-house, holistic, comprehensive and trauma-informed services.
Race Details and Logistics
The Run for Strength will take place at the Carousel/Miniature train area of Wheaton Regional Park. As there are multiple entrances to the park, please be sure to follow directions to the entrance at 2002 Shorefield Rd, Wheaton, MD 20902, and make your first right into the parking lot. Ample parking is available and if you plan to take public transportation, a link to bus routes is available here.
Bibs and timing chips will be distributed at registration. The 5K route is an out and back on mostly pavement, with some trail. A water station is located at miles 1 and 3. The 1 mile route is the first half mile (all on pavement) of the 5K route. Both routes are open to walkers and runners. An indoor restroom is available at registration.
Mama Lucia and Bethesda Bagel are generously providing food, so bring your appetite!
We will have an extensive raffle with prizes from restaurants, stores and fitness studios including Sport and Health, Zengo Cycle, RnJ Sports, Fuse Pilates, Cava, Mama Lucia, Lebanese Taverna, Modern Market and Paper Source. Tickets will be sold at the race for $5 each or 4 for $20.
In addition to running in the race, you can also sign up to volunteer on the day of the event.
