RTP NSBE Jr. Membership Sign-Up

We are the Research Triangle Protégés Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, also referred to as RTP NSBE JR. We are operated by the Research Triangle Professionals Chapter of NSBE. We serve Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC and surrounding areas.

RTP NSBE Jr was founded nationally in 1990 to offer opportunities to encourage STEM interest in minorities and to enable academic excellence. RTP NSBE Jr was founded in 2019 as a community chapter to provide equitable access to the benefits of NSBE Jr programming to minority youth in this geographic area. We do not discriminate, and youth of all ethnicities are welcome.

Our advisors and volunteers require background approval so we can safely interact with students. All activities are virtual and remote until further notice.

To learn more about the programs and benefits of NSBE Jr. visit NSBE JR Membership. This is the link to the national site. Programming benefits grades K - 12, however only students in grades 3 - 12 can officially join nationally. This is an annual membership.

Grades 3 - 12

To join RTP NSBE Jr., students in grades 3-12 will need to join both the national ($5) and local organization ($7) by FIRST completing the national form and then local chapter sign up via this eventbrite page. The total cost is $12 (service fees included).

To join the national organization, each student MUST have a unique email address. Parents or legal guardians can check this account on their behalf. Please fill out the student's information in the national form for each student that needs to register:

1- Complete the national registration here for renewing and new accounts. If renewing membership, please have the student's email address, NSBE ID ready and password handy. If you do not recall your ID, contact your advisor.

2- A receipt will be emailed to the student's address. Obtain the Customer ID from this receipt.

3- The customer ID is their NSBE ID. Save it securely, as it will remain with the student for the rest of their NSBE life. It is REQUIRED to complete the local chapter registration for grades 3 - 12.

Grades K - 2

Although students in grades K-2 are not yet eligible to join nationally, they can still benefit from programming. Locally we offer activities to allow them to explore STEM. They can join our interest group by paying local dues only ($7) via this event brite page.

Recent graduates (from 2023)

High school seniors who recently graduated need to renew their membership as collegiate members ($15) at nsbe.org, using their same email address and NSBE ID. They will also need to join the college chapter at their school, if one exist, to remain active. If not, they can join Research Triangle Collegiates to stay connected to NSBE benefits. Email adivsor@nsbertp.org or call 919-576-0051 for details.

Brief Summary of RTP NSBE JR

About Us

Research Triangle Protégés affectionately known as RTP NSBE Jr Chapter was founded in Oct 2, 2019 by the collaborative efforts of Dr. Toni Arnold-McFarland and Marquis Buford. They are members of RTP NSBE and launched this chapter as a part of the PCI (Pre-College) initiative. The award-winning RTP NSBE Jr Chapter helped RTP NSBE become Professional Chapter of the Year 2019 – 2020 and region 2 chapter of the year 2020-2021. RTP NSBE Jr has been recognized as region 2 Chapter of the Year.

The chapter has had anywhere from 5 to 45 members since its inception, but generally this number has settled to 20-25 each year. We are a community chapter that takes grades K – 12 with the majority being of African descent. We do not discriminate and have had officers of Asian, Greek and Latinx descent.

We focus on mission critical activities. We emphasize academic excellence, character, and self-discovery by bringing awareness to innovators of diverse backgrounds/hues.  We encourage scholarly research on black innovators and those our members identify with.

Each year a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, programs chair and academic excellence chair have been identified/appointed. RTP NSBE Jr serves Raleigh-Durham- Chapel Hill and surrounding areas. The mode of operation is primarily virtual, as we have members across multiple states.

Programs

Some of the competitions and expositions RTP NSBE JR has completed in the past include: First Lego League Jr teams under the leadership of Cortechs Robotics.  (the Visionaries and the Extraordinaries),TMAL (Try Math A Lon) under the name the Exponentials (High School Math Quiz bowl) and NSBE JR Explorer research projects. These activities are provided in the NSBE JR Playbook released each fall term to NSBE JR advisors/leadership.

We have several key “home-grown” programs for our membership and interested youth; Black Brilliance in STEM Young Scholars (Feb 2020) provide self-discovery and awareness of black inventors/innovators.  A.C.E. (Academic Concentration for Excellence) Tutoring launched in Fall 2021 to provide virtual tutoring to grades K-12.  T.R.E.N.D.S. (Technical Research Enrichment for Navigating Data Science) launched Summer 2022 after we received a $40,000 grant to serve 30 underserved youth virtually in grades 6- 12. This grant was in conjunction with Howard University and the National Institute of Health. Our fall 2023 T.R.E.N.D.S. mini camp is taking place via a grant from Collins Aerospace. The Matriculators (College Readiness Mentoring Groups) will take place Fall 2023 to help students in grades 9 – 12 complete high school and move on to greater engagement. We will host an Hour of Code event in December 2023. When funding is available we help cover conference expenses to members so they can attend youth enriching activities and be inspired to achieve.

Funding:We are self- funded and do not have a regular sponsor or grantor. Most of our funding comes from corporate partnering, periodica volunteer donations, in-kind donations and receipt of virtual scholarships.
