Peter Nicks | 2021 | US | 90 mins.

Directed by Peter Nicks and executive produced by Ryan Coogler, Homeroom follows a group of Oakland High School seniors in the tumultuous 2020 school year. The documentary is the final chapter in a trilogy of films by Nicks—including The Waiting Room (2012) and The Force (2017)—examining the relationship between health care, criminal justice, and education in Oakland, CA over the past decade. Oakland is a rich microcosm of American Life and Homeroom highlights how Oakland High is no exception. Displaced by gentrification in the Bay Area, constricted by fear of deportation, and intimidated by police, they have a firsthand education in systemic injustice. At centerstage is Denilson Garibo, one of two Student Directors on the Board of Education representing the students in Oakland. His role places him between two worlds, bringing the concerns of his peers to the ears of adults who are often pursuing different priorities. In a year derailed by the pandemic and rocked by the national trauma of the police killings of George Floyd and so many others, Homeroom celebrates the tenacity of today’s youth and their determination to make change.

Organizer Rooftop Films

Organizer of Rooftop Films | Homeroom

At Rooftop Films we believe film can be so much more than just watching a movie, so we curate unique events that combine great music, quality film, and some of the most beautiful locations that New York has to offer. By thinking beyond the screen, we help to bring communities together and change the way that film, music, art, and ideas interact with the city around us.

Rooftop Films’ mission is to engage and inspire diverse communities by showing movies in outdoor locations, supporting the production of new independent films, helping local organizations to produce screenings and events, and renting equipment at low-cost to artists and nonprofits. Rooftop Films is more than a film festival. We are a community. We are a collective collaboration between filmmakers and festivals; between audience members and artists; between venues and neighborhoods. Our goal is to nurture a vibrant independent filmmaking and film-going community not only by exhibiting the work of emerging filmmakers, but also by providing essential support systems for those who otherwise have none.
