About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Are difficult conversations challenging for you? Role-playing with a neutral party can help by making things feel less charged, lowering the stakes, and providing opportunities to practice different ways to handle the conversation.

One unusual feature of this session is to optionally record a role-play of your difficult conversation and then potentially share it with the person you actually need to have the difficult conversation with.

    Approaches I work with

My experience with role-plays comes from work that I've done in Nonviolent Communication (for an introduction to Nonviolent Communication go to http://teddybeartalk.com/index.php?title=Nonviolent_communication). If desired, we can explore using Nonviolent Communication in the role-plays that we do in this session.

Additionally, ideas from my Teddy Bear Talk project will guide these role-plays. For example, learning how to ask questions that are open and honest creates a blank canvas for talkers to paint on. In contrast, questions with more of an agenda can feel like being commanded to paint by numbers, which creates difficulties. Teddy Bear Talk is about supporting talkers to take things wherever they need to go and staying out of their way.
