In a novel that fuses the riveting action of The Boys in the Boat with the emotional heft of The Fault in Our Stars, twenty cancer patients compete in a grueling race only to discover that real victory is achieved within.
Tripp Avery has always been a very proud man, so when his past mistakes—along with a recent diagnosis of neuroendocrine cancer— catch up with him, he’s humbled to say the least. But for some reason, he reluctantly agrees to coach a paddling team in a bid to win the Dragon Boat U.S. National Championship.
In his boat are twelve other men and eight women who all have cancer diagnoses just as debilitating as his. Eager to resist his diagnosis and prove his worth, Tripp can only see the finish line. But as the races begin in the intense summer heat of Tennessee, four of his teammates struggle with physical limitations and the psychological weight of their conditions. Tripp's patience grows thin, and he is forced to realize that in order to keep pushing forward he must confront his own demons first.
Despite the odds, he resolves to rally the team toward a comeback that seems impossible, if only for one final victory.
