As part of a coordinated effort to provide low-cost opportunities for people from the communities surrounding the Lehigh River to get ON the river, Lehigh Gap Nature Center is proud to offer the first annual River Camp!
Thanks to our partnership with a local river outfitter (Jim Thorpe River Adventures), campers will learn about safe, responsible boating, while we teach about history and ecology in and around the river. Throughout the course of this program, youth participants will have fun learning a new sport while gaining an unparalleled appreciation of all that the river provides for wildlife and humans.
The camp includes:

<LI>Beginner-level instruction</LI>
<LI>Naturalist-led educational info and wildlife ID</LI>
<LI>All equipment necessary</LI>
</UL>
Join us at the Osprey House at Lehigh Gap Nature Center (8844 Paint Mill Rd., Slatington, PA) for a meet-and-greet on Tuesday, May 23 from 4:30-6:00 to meet some of the instructors, view the type of boats we'll be using, have any questions answered and sign-up in person (if you haven't done so already).

Tentative camp schedule:
Day 1 - Beltzville; Topics for study: Introduction to watersheds, history of Beltzville Dam and current function within the Delaware River Basin
Day 2 - Lehigh Gap (East Penn to LGNC); Topics for study: History of Lehigh Gap, Macro Survey (Industrial History)
Day 3 - Jim Thorpe to Lehighton; Topics for study: Cultural/Natural History
Day 4 - Bike and Boat: Canal Park to Sand Island; Topics for study: Canal history, Comparative Macro Survey/River Snorkel
Day 5 - Lehighton to Lehigh Gap; Try a new craft or build skills - Pizza party with parents at LGNC

Camp time: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily
Camp location: Meet at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center’s Osprey House at Lehigh Gap at 11am each morning. We will bus to launch sites and return by 5:00pm each day.
Who is eligible: Any student entering grades 6 - 12.
Registration Fee: $110 per student. Scholarships are available for economically disadvantaged children.
