<h2>Join us to explore 'What is education for?'</h2><p>This seminar is the first in a series organised by the Queen's Department of Education in the School of Social Science, Education and Social Work around the theme <strong><strong>Aims of </strong></strong><strong><strong>Education</strong></strong>. The series will explore some of the ethical, social and cultural purposes of education. Drawing on perspectives from theory, policy and practice the speakers will consider what education is for and what its aims should be in our contemporary context in Northern Ireland.</p><h3>Seminar 1: Rewilding Education, by Prof Hilary Cremin (University of Cambridge)</h3><h4>The Senate Room, Lanyon Building, QUB</h4><p>Professor Hilary Cremin is the Head of Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge. In her latest book, <em><em>Rewilding Education</em></em>, she identifies some of the major problems and challenges with education in the twenty-first century and argues for transformative change. She sets out a vision of education in which schools nurture creativity, cultivate critical thought and focus on students’ social and emotional development alongside academic achievement. She says 'If we keep preparing children for the second half of the 21st century using a system designed in the 19th, it could do catastrophic harm. We need to rethink what it means to educate, and what we are educating for.'</p><p>Professor Cremin uses the concept of 'rewilding' to propose a deconstruction of the current standardised system of education and the development of holistic forms of learning.</p>
